NDT after PWHT

03/12/2013 1:02 AM

If I have a pipe spool with 4 welds and there cooked in the furnance afterwards all 4 welds are X-rayed and 1 needs repairing. Now it's repaired and a pre-x-ray is done to clear the weld, then it's put through another heat cycle. Should all welds be re-xrayed or just the repaired one? If so,where is it stated?

Can you make sure that the welds are ok after you rework and reheat everything? I assume that the first x-ray would be alright, but there might be a standard or code telling you otherwise.

If in doubt re x ray everything!

What is your code of construction???

As per ASME B&PV Section VIII Division-1, Clause UCS-56(f)(5) ,Page No-177

"After the finished repair weld has reached ambient temperature, it shall be inspected using the same non-destructive examination that was used in (f)(3) above, except that for P-No. 3, Group No. 3 materials, the examination shall be made after the material has been at ambient temperature for a minimum period of 48 hr to determine the presence of possible delayed cracking of the weld. If the examination is by the magnetic particle method, only the alternating current yoke type is acceptable. In addition, welded repairs greater than 3⁄8 in. (10 mm) deep in materials and in welds that are required to be radiographed by the rules of this Division, shall be radiographically examined to the requirements of UW-51."
