Non Damaging Glue?

05/29/2007 3:06 AM

Is there a product that would allow one to fasten an emblem to a painted surface without damage if later removed? Not sure how many of you ride bikes, but I have a Honda Dream 50R that I would like to add the Honda 'wings' on the tank, just like the original '62 had. For some reason, Honda left them off, although I have period pix that show they did indeed have the famous Honda wings. I'm looking for something that would allow the emblems to be removed, time left on indefinite, without damaging the original paint.

See if you can find someone who can make you one out of flexible rubber (or whatever it is) magnet. A lot of car dealerships use this to put their nasty little logos on new cars.

or, if you can find a sheet of this flexible magnet material, you can cut it to size and glue the emblem onto it.

Good idea bhankii but I have heard that if you leave these magnets on for awhile they will fade the paint behind them. Possibly from certain chemicals in the magnetic substrate. I don't know if this is true or not. Just something I heard.

Maybe someone else knows more about this.

Regards,

John

I have a neighbor who makes the rounds of all the shows of bikes and antique autos. He makes a killing on selling stock and custom logos of all kinds to the car & bike buffs.

You could try ordinary silicon bathroom sealant (clear type). I find it will stick wash basins and toilet cisterns to the wall quite firmly and it doesn't appear to mark the surfaces. To remove the Wings you can use a sharp blade (taking care not to scratch the paint). Only apply a small bead of the sealant around the edge of the Wings to make removal easier. Sealant remover will get rid of any residue. Suggest you try this on a bit of hidden paintwork first just in case!!!

Silicone will work fine and wont damage duco - it is used to help attatch wing spoilers on some models of car -not structural in this application but your logo is much smaller :). Otherwise a cheap hot melt glue gun from hardware store with the general purpose adhesive that comes with it will also work. In both cases you are not penetrating and the adhesive can later be peeled off but will hold fairly well - don't try water blasting to clean your bike but...

Oh.. and either will suffer some heat degredation if the bike gets very hot - petrol tank should be OK though.

How about 3m rubber cement applied to both surfaces and then positioned into place. After the glue has adhered you take a little piece that you allowed to dry and roll it into a ball. By pressing the ball to the glue sticking out under the decal and rolling it away from the egde it will pick up and remove the residue. I use this process when stenciling for a clean edge.

One question! Have you tried looking for decals original to the design on the internet? I have found several places that had decals for a 25 year old Honda Shadow I restored for my son.

How long do you want to have this emblem in place?

Once you remove it, it will be clean and shiny underneath. The area around it will probably show some scratchs or scuffs. The paint on the tank may also begin to fade after some time. You may not want to remove it if it stays for too long, because you will still see where it was.

How about that glue they use to stick the cardboard labels onto those plastic bowls of lunch meat? It looks sort of like hot melt glue, but it's rubbery, very strong, and comes off clean.

As a long time builder of bikes, my hobby, I find that it is better to have the emblem done in a decal, put it on and clear coat the tank. Last, but does not come off. Any adhesive you use that can be removed will not hold up long on a tank exposed to the environment. Simple as that.

Production bikes uses decals for all the "art work (if you can call it that). Most do not even put a clear coat over the decal, just slap it on the paint.

Hi Ydobon,

I suspect STERNK13 is probably looking to put the bike in ORIGINAL condition, A.K.A. vintage condition. That's what it sounds like anyway. If the original had glued on wings, seems like decals would be a detraction.

Cheers,

John
