Free Piston Linear Alternator- Promising For EV's?

03/14/2013 10:56 AM

DLR Free Piston Variable Stroke Linear Alternator / Oscillator AC power generator for Electric Vehicle Use.

Think of it as a Range Extender.

Variable compression, variety of fuels.

Low parts count. Low mass.

Could make less expensive batteries competitive for electric vehicles.

What's your take?

Looks like a very viable system for range extension for the faint of heart going with EV'S. Some people just don't like the time it takes to recharge on grid or off. This takes that fear out of the equation and make's it an alternative way to recharge where there is no infrastructure. And it could be set up to be multi-fuel that one would find in the area of use. Really neat idea wonder if it will ever become commercially available to the EV market in the near future Duke

Not a new idea; some hybrids on the market use a small gasoline engine (ICE) to charge the battery as it gets low.

But this motor-generator may be lighter and have better efficiency than a classic rotary ICE for the same electric power output.

Sorry Miklosh I should of qualified what I ment that these would be more size and weight concious to the EV'R. Most consumers would not know the difference.

For the same HP output compare it with ICE with regard to weight, space required, initial cost, maintenance cost, dependability, efficiency etc

Without incorporating fuel powered engine, can't we generate power by linear generator

(driven by solar/wind using the linear motor principle aboard a linear motor driven railcar) using the remanant magnetism in the rails to induce a voltage in a moving coil.?

pnaban' the general thought to this thread was for range extension for EV'. But to your thought to rail car you may be correct that a linear alternator might be a good source of energy for a rail car.
