ERW Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipe

Hello,

Electric Resistance Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel (here after called as ASS) pipes are commercially available or not? If so, pls give the ASME or ASTM Specification for my reference.One of my friends told me that it is not possible to make ASS pipes as the electricity will damage the pipe and excessive oxidation will be the result.

Austenitic stainless steel is a very resistance weldable material. It is rarely subject to corrosion after welding, but in the event that oxidation does occur, it can be prevented by passivation.

Yes welderman, your point is valid and appreciated.That is why the length of carbon steel welding electrodes and austenitic stainless steel electrode differs. Oxidation can be removed by pickling and passivation. Finally a solution treatment to fine tune the physical metallurgy.So,is it possible to make ASS pipes by ERW process? Or should we use High Frequency electric resistance process?

Both heating methods you are considering are forms of resistance welding. An advantage of the high frequency method is that it can sometimes be done using less power from the mains. This is because the high frequency heating confines the current flow closer to the surface of the heated material. You may want to consider the high frequency method to save energy, but I wouldn't expect higher quality welds.

Welderman,Could you explain a bit more on what sense the quality is not higher for ERW ASS pipes? Are you afraid of Planar and Volumetric defects like porosity?lack of fusion?Lack of penetration?Lack of side wall fusion?Lack of inter run fusion?Root under cut?Cap Under Cut?Lack of fill?Arc strikes?Cracks? Or any kind of metallurgical problems?

First, we are not experts in welded pipe. Second, we are not afraid of any type of welding. I have already explained that high frequency welding is more efficient than 60 cycle welding. It is also more efficient than induction welding. The details will depend on what type of pipe you plan to weld. Size, material wall thickness, pipe construction (straight or spiral wound), welding speed, etc. all make a difference. Please make these determinations and then contact a company that manufactures pipe welding machinery.
