ASME Section VIII Hydrostatic Test, Pressure Gauge

03/20/2013 9:15 AM

Can someone help me out with this? per ASME Section VIII pressure Gages used for Hydrostatic testing of vessels "shall be calibrated against a standard dead weight tester OR a calibrated master Gage." (UG-102) We send our pressure Gages out yearly for calibration against a master gage. My Question is: Does Section VIII require an out of tolarance procedure? or any course of action if a gage comes back as out of tolarance? and where it is stated in the code?

thanks

With this question you seem to indicate that you have Section VIII available to read. But then you ask us if the same section requires a certain procedure.

If you have Section VIII: read it and if it is not there it is not there

If you do not have it: Get it so you know exactly what is in there and don't have to work from hearsay.

My taking is that if the gage is out of calibration you need to bring it back into calibration most likly using the manufacturers procedure. After that you check again against ASME Section VIII requirements.

Normally the consultant or the client insists a test certificate of calibration of the gauges before accepting the gauges and instruments. And all testings conducted with those gauges and instruments within the tollerances mentioned in the test certificate will be acceptable to the client and consultants.

What we do offshore, is we have a class 0.05 pressure "calibrator" which is calibrated yearly by a certified company. Then when we do a hydrostatic test, we use a class 0.5 gauge which is checked against the calibrated instrument. We do the check before and after the test. We then make a certificate where the technician state the gauge to be within tolerances according to the calibrated instrument. DNV accept this.

This is according to requirements in ASME, but I do not know the exact place and phrase where it is stated.

Hello, Anonymous Poster!

UG-102 merely mandates the ranges of gages to be used in your test and that the gages must be calibrated and maintained. From there, let's go to UG-91 "The Inspector". UG-91(b) gives the inspector the duty to monitor your Quality Control System. When you contracted with your Authorized Inspection Agency, the assigned inspector(s) had you, or someone within your company, write a Quality Control Program per Mandatory Appendix 10. 10-12 states that you must have in place a system for the "calibration of examination, measuring, and test equipment used in fulfillment of requirements of this division". 10-13 requires you to have a system in place for retention of records of numerous documents and procedures, one of which is hydrostatic test records (including the gage number) and another is nonconformances and dispositions (to address the issue of a gage malfunction and the proposed method of correction or disposal).

This is a long write to say that if you are working to ASME Section VIII, Div, 1, your Quality Control Manager is responsible for already having the answer to you question.
