7/32, 20 tpi Pan Slot Head Metal Screws

03/18/2013 5:34 PM

Hi, I'm looking for some assistance in locating some metal thread screws.

I'm looking for a small quantity of 7/32, 20 tpi pan slot head metal screws to replace items from old Stanley metal woodworking planes. Length 1/2, 3/4 or 1"

These items are not available in any hardware store I have found, nor in specialist nuts, bolts and fastener suppliers. I live in the central west of NSW Australia population 12,000. I have visited larger towns and cities in my quest to locate these screws without success and have reverted to the internet in an attempt to find a supplier.

I appreciate any suggestions as to where I may find a supplier.

Thank you,

Tony Horsington

If this is a Stanley, made in the USA, could the screws be 1/4"X20? After threading and use, a screw like this could possibly measure 7/32". I'm not sure what #12 screws measure. A machinist's handbook would tell. I think #12 screws also came 20 threads per inch.

Thanks Mike for your thoughts and feedback.

I have re measured an unworn as new screw with a digital caliper and it is definitely 7/16".

I also had it measured a week or so ago by a nut and bolt specialist who stated it was 7/16" 20 tpi. The Planes are definitely USA Manufactured Stanley woodworking Planes of various models from pre 1900 to 1950's vintages.

Please advise if you have any additional info or a supplier.

Many thanks once again,

7/32 ≠ 7/16.

Which?

7/16-20 = UNF; #12-28 = UNF; #12-24 = UNC; #12 = 0.216 od ≈ 0.21875 = 7/32.

Hi Tornado,

The best I can come up with is 7/32", thread measured by a L.S. Starrett Co. #7 thread gauge as 20.064. Does this assist in identifying the screw ??

Thanks for your kind assistance.

Oh, for goodness sakes. Re-tap the holes 1/4"X20 and use standard screws. What you take out won't hardly be noticeable. Even in tempered steel, a good sharp tap will work.

Thanks Mike for you great advice, which I will follow as a last resort. Obviously my first preference remains to replace the odd worn / stripped screw with a similar replacement.

Mike,

I can understand if he didn't want to do that because of the vintage nature of these planes. He says these are "1900-1950's" vintage units, and keeping them as original as possible would probably be preferred.

Now, if all he's trying to do is get a good, working plane, than tap away!

Thanks Tom.

You are very correct in your summation. A quantity of the metal Stanley planes are patented editions from Mar 25 1902, Aug 19 1902, Apr 19 1910 etc which, in my opinion, should be kept as original as possible. Other ( wooden ) planes I have of interest are stamped 1862 onwards, while not valuable, are collectable and can present well cleaned up.

Any assistance in locating the screws required would be helpful.

Thank you,

Tony
