Surfactants

03/19/2013 12:53 PM

OK.

I want to make ferrofluid. I know that I need toner. Is one better than another? I know that I need an oil suspension. The lighter the better? Is one more conducive than another? I know that I need/want surfactant. What would be the best to use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Toner??You need to do lots of research before you try this.

You know absolutely nothing about making ferrofluid and want us to walk you through the process.

NO WAY; NO HOW!

DON,T BE SUCH A LAZY BUTT AND READ UP ON THE PROCESS YOURSELF.

unfortunately as I am in Australia the Popsci site automatically redirects me to the Australian version of the site which doesnt have that article

THis appears to be a better way to make ferro fluid than with toner- but much more complex

Wow. Not the response that I was expecting from CR4. Not looking for a free ride, just answers to some specifics. This is usually where i come for specifics that I cant find elsewhere. I have read the link you posted. Still not answering the questions.

I have done a fair amount of research but was looking for some particulars that I have not been able to find such as the questions that I posed.

Best oil, Best surfactant to reduce surface tension, proportions etc. I would like to communicate with someone who actually has experience with the process.

If you CAN help, I would appreciate it. If you just want to slam, I would not appreciate it.

You original question does not indicate much research on your part.

I'd just follow the directions you can easily find, such as: Make your own ferrofluid! - KoserLab [PDF]

Magnetic Fluid (Ferrofluid) - ScienceGeekGirl

Or, better yet, just buy some.

Perhaps, a misunderstanding..

I am looking for specifics such as would mineral oil be better than vegetable oil for suspension, or another. Is there a more suitable material than toner? what might serve as the BEST surfactant? I am looking for the cleanest best display of the field.

I have made an electro magnet (4"x19" mild steel core) that is creating the field that I need and have topped it off with a 2.5"x17" hex bolt that should give some interesting field display.

Anyone have experience with this stuff?
