Catterpillar Generator Does Not Produce Volage

03/19/2013 2:06 PM

Hi,

We have a catterpillar generator of 500kVA Capacity, the generator were running continously for some time due to failure on utility power supply. From today the generator runs but do not produce electricity. What might be the cause of the problem.

Regards

Might be a lot of things. What have you tried so far???

You must have done some troubleshooting, right?

Then you would have gone to the Cat website and looked for more help, right?

Then, you must have called Cat Tech line and talked to a tech, right?

Finally, a service tech would be the logical next step, right?

If you can't figure it out when it's right in front of you, we can't see it, and you have given no usable information, so far.

Good luck.

With so little information we have no idea.

Has someone broken in to the generator and stolen the copper windings on the generator?

As good a guess as any, please get someone qualified in to inspect and repair the generator.

My guess is that probably an overload or thermal protection tripped, read the manual, there must be a maintenance and troubleshooting section (for the price of catterpillar equipment, a service engineer should come in the crate).

Dear Mr.dmtonyole,

Your posting does not contain required inf.

While Engine is running "Do Not Produce Electricity" means, NO VOLTAGE DEVELOPED, or BUILT UP, this is what I understand. If so,

Pl. check the 1. EXCITATION SYSTEM of the Alternator, 2. Battery, 3.Continuity of the Field Winding, 4. Revolving Diodes etc.

Pl. post the inf. how the problem was sorted out, what was the problem.?

Hi

i will post the information once the problem is sorted out. The generator produces 10V at 1500rpm. the fault might be on the AVR. we expect to change the AVR and see the result.

Dear all

thanks for your contributions,

we changed the AVR but still the generator out put voltage was still low (10V) which neccessitate further inspection of the excitation system. Fault of some diodes in the rotating rectifier bridge was the cause of the problem, after replacement of the rotating rectifier bridge, the out put voltage resumed to normal (410V L-L)

You get a GA for your answer as you were able to guess the actual problem.

Shorted/open Exciter coil or coils, most likely on the Armature since you aren't making any volts. Look for the MOV, on the exciter, and it should be gone or VERY black and signs of arcing around it; that was caused by the fault that destroyed your exciter. Now the Exciter ring can be changed BUT there are many different flavors and getting the right one is hard. At the rebuild/rewind shop all the coils can be repaired. Change the generator.
