Bimetal Effect

03/20/2013 7:12 AM

I have 6.6kV MVD with copper busbar and copper cable using Alumunium cable lug.

Does bimetal effect occur?

Is this okay?

As a general rule, the "aluminum" that you perceive the lugs to be made of is in actuality an alloy specially developed to expand and contract at a similar rate to copper bus material. You should look for and observe a stamp that says "Cu/Al" on it, if not, do not use them.

If you are referring to corrosion effects of having dissimilar metals in contact with each other, for corrosion to occur, you also need moisture. You are not supposed to have moisture in electrical equipment, so the point is moot. Dielectric corrosion in dissimilar metals is a problem in plumbing connections because... it is carrying water!

Why do people on this site have to be so arrogant in their attitude when they reply to questions when people are just trying to learn from other people that have knollege to pass on from their experiance?

What is the experiance you've learned in life so valueable that you will take it to the grave with out telling any 1? God forbid that you might help some 1 learn from your mistakes
