Square D Contactor Relay Specifications

03/26/2013 12:53 AM

Hi All,

Anyone know where I can get the specifications for Square D contactor relay, class 7000 series A DO.44. I'm particularly interested in the safety failure factor or any parameters that can assist on confirming the safety rating of this contactors. I know this is a pretty old contactor and chances are failure rate and safety failure factor may not be a big thing then. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

That relay is extremely obsolete and predates the Internet, so it's not likely you will find anything on it, nor if you manage to will there have been any modern safety ratings applied to it. That was never a "contactor", it was what we called a "Pilot Relay", meaning it's intended use was as an interposing relay in applications where we switched 600V class control circuits on large machinery but had to use lower votlages for the coils, i.e. 120V or 24V. When I worked for Sq. D 25+ years ago, we had already obsoleted those relays in favor of the Class 8501 relays, which themselves are now getting hard to get. If you are looking to certify a machine safety system, I would not want anyone relying on a 30 or 40 year old relay for safety. Just replace it with something modern and certified.

Thank you all for the information and fair warning. I guess these were put into a system that has been operating since early 60's, and seriously, safety ain't such a big deal then... I will try to check with Schneider but I think the chance is pretty slim. Thanks all the same..

merc, I hear ya. But I do have to say after a life time of Allan Bradley ordering, installing for 11 years, then selling AB for 20 years with a distributor that was only supposed to be a 6 month gig. I still today have no idea what happened there. I was in between bands and recording sessions and this guy needed help, a friend that was short man power so I stepped in. anyways. 20 Years later, my company took over the entire North East coast with AB gear. I split from the company in 2005. In 2008 I designed several control panels that were all AB controls from the company I left. Talk about non service, there was 0 customer service from them at all. In the end I got a SQ D cat, found a local SQd rep, and in the end spent over a million on the project I was working on with an in door fish farm. Including a complete outdoor rated 3 section MCC/Distribution center connected to a new 3500KVA XMR from National Grid. So, due to the complacent BS I dealt with on the first set of panels, the company lost every drive, terminal, motor starter, push button, limit switch, wire, SMC, all logic controllers and all gear. All went SQD. And the only thing that were not, were the AC drives. Those were all Emerson all 156 of them. SQD drives suck.

AB Drives were great, but I did not have access from them except with my brother, but due to him being in PA, I was out of his APR so I had to find an alternative to reduce costs since AB protects their APR's and being my past company owns the entire NE which is wrong since they suck, I had to find an alternative and they worked very well. I think SQD switches are a bit delicate, their relays are fine, their contactors and OLd's are fine NEMA design, their SMC's seemed to be fine. their fuse block IEC 3 Phase units seemed to be a little chincy, but only had a problem with 1 AB unit, MADE IN CHINA! Over all I'd give SQD a decent rating based on personal experience over the past 48 years of dealing with their products. I still like AB Push buttons. Just seem much more robust. I never dealt with any of SQD plc's in any way. This is where AB really shines. Competing against AB PLC's and SLC products, that would be a hard sell. They really have their shit together there. And their drives are really awesome , but so are the Emerson's I used.

In the 2 years of that project, I only had 1 failure of an SMC unit and SQD made good right away. Did not have another failure. So SQD in my book is a decent product.
