Pouring a Babbitt Bearing

03/29/2013 11:01 AM

Hi Everyone:

My son, Will and I received a $6000 proposal to rebuild our turbine main shaft bearing. We decided to do the job ourselves. This is how we did it:

I hope you and your families are healthy and prospering!!

Sincerely,

Wow, another wonderful and informative project posting. The only problem with your web site is that I spend way too much time looking at all your photographs and project details.

Thank you,
Bruce

Very interesting. Lots of work, but the price is right.

Glad to hear of your success with the re-babbit project. I noted you mixed two types of babbit. Do you recall the chemistry?

Great post .
I don't get to play with big engineering.
But if you ever need someone to run around getting in the way attention seeking and chasing mousies I'm the cat.

OOOHH you're going to be so jealous if I ever post a picture of Mr Squeak, My wifes cat, riding around on the ol dozer and moving dirt with me!

My wife wants me to get him a little bitty kitty hard hat first though.

(Seriously fuzzhead does get up on the dozer with me some times when I am working.)

If you do, that sounds like a good one for Kaplin to put on "caption this"!

If the ground thaws out in the next few weeks I will be getting back to moving dirt for the new house project so I think I can get a picture of us then if that will do it for you?

You are rediscovering what a lot of current engineers would call lost technology. Nobody pours babbitt in house. In fact most technicians and engineers would asy "whats that?". Once again, I am absolutely amazed at what you are doing, and how you are doing it. Thanks for the update.

Not so, we pour Babbitt's all the time. I have since the early 70's, just got to be in an industry that uses large slow moving shafts.

Dear Mr.walt,

Right from 1977 till 1990, I was pouring Babbit Bearing, for the Steam Turbine of speed of 8250 RPM., at that time every industrial people sent only to one company, for RE-BABBITTING, who charged exhorbitantly.

My argument with my management was - God has given WISDOM and we are all qualified, responsible officers. Our M.D did not concede immediately. After persuasion, I succeeded, in my attempt.

I took extreme care right from Cleaning, and Tinning, for 3 years all steps were carried out in my presence, as I did not want to take chance and there after it became routine, and we did Pouring of Babbitt Bearing, to neighbouring Industry, also, and charged at Actuals, on NO LOSS - NO PROFIT BASIS.
