Series Connection of Two Identical 1 Ph AC Induction Motors

04/01/2013 6:11 AM

I have two identical single phase table fans designed to work on 110V ac supply. At home I have 220v single phase supply. If I connect both the fan motors in series to the 220v supply, will the arrangement work satisfactorily? What problems can I expect?

If the motors are universal or shaded pole it should work OK. Capacitor start my be a problem though.

Try it, give them a quick flick of the switch and see what happens.

Got to ask though………. Why?

It is neither a universal motor nor a shaded pole motor. It is an ordinary, small, capacitor start and run 1 ph induction motor. The fans were bought by a friend visiting outside India because they run without any noise and look different and he did not bother to check the voltage. I want to use them first with our standard voltage i.e. 220V. Bus as you suggested there is no harm in connecting and trying.

Thanks.

From the question 220V phase to neutral. So why the question about the neutral? It's not going to help with the mid point between the two fans.

Some countries use a sensible domestic distribution system.

I think following things will happen.

1.The motors being in series ,current through them will be same.

2.Since the motors may not be exactly identical, they will tend to stabilize at some speed which may not be their normal speeds.

3.Any change in the speed of one motor will tend to destabilize the balance and change the speed of other motor also.

4.One motor may have a voltage less than 110v and naturally the other will have voltage more than 110V across it which will be harmful to the motor with higher voltage.

5.Even though the voltages across the motors could be different, the current through them will be same. The motor speeds will be different.

6.The motors may not attain steady state at all and will tend to oscillate.

You are saying the fans are identical. Yes, it is correct as far as their manufacture is. But many other things cannot remain constant. For one example, are you sure both the fans will speed up in exact manner. There are many more variables.

Better get a step down transformer or auto transformer of appropriate capacity and use them.
