IR and PI Tests

04/05/2013 11:49 PM

IR and PI tests are performed frequently for knowing the healthiness of the insulation. After maintenance ,before putting equipment in service and also before carrying out electrical tests this IR and PI is done.Does IR and PI test have any adverse effect on the insulation (oil or solid ) of electrical equipments ?

Only if the insulation is defective.

If you're looking for justification for NOT TESTING, don't.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the insulation is defective. D'oh!

The magnitude & duration of the IR and/or PI test does not warrant any worry about deterioration of insulation.

But, a HV test would surely do.

Thankyou for the reply.Actually DC testing on insulation material such as HIpot test does have adverse effect on it. But I have not noticed any abnormality in the insulation after IR and PI at 5kv max. voltage. It was my apprehension .
