I'm not into that field, but if I were you I'd read the specifications for both pipes, that will surely tell me the difference.

The only thing I can tell you, and just because I saw it while browsing a datasheet, is that you shouldn't use carbon steel pipes for over 450C Deg. due to the risk of getting carbon converted into graphite; not sure how serious is that, but I wouldn't want one thing converted into another while in use.

Hi,

A106 describe seamless carbon steel pipe for High-Temperature Service.

But API 5L describe International Standard specifies requirements for the manufacture of two product specification levels. (PSL 1 and PSL 2) of seamless and welded steel pipes for use in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. This International Standard is not applicable to cast pipe.

1. ASTM A106 is for seamless pipe and API 5L is for both welded pipes and seamless pipes.

2. A106 spec is Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service, while API 5L is Steel pipe for pipeline transportation systems in Petroleum and natural gas industries.

for more info, you can check HYSP Steel Pipe website.

Regards,

Jason
