The Jaguar C-X75

04/15/2013 12:25 PM

"In terms of performance, Jaguar envisions future super cars reaching 330 km/h (205 mph) and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 3.4 seconds and 80 to 145 km/h (50 to 90 mph) in 2.3 seconds. It is powered by four 145 kW (194 hp) electric motors - one for each wheel - which produce 780 hp (582 kW) and a total torque output of 1,600 N·m (1,180 lbf·ft). Inherent in the drivetrain is the ability to independently vector torque to each wheel across the full speed range.[3][7] Each motor weighs 50 kilograms (110 lb).[2]

The micro gas turbines from Bladon Jets generate enough electricity to extend the range of the car to 900 km (559 mi) while producing 28 grams of CO2 per kilometre on the EU test cycle. While running solely on battery power, the C-X75 has an all-electric range of 110 km (68 mi).[3][7]Among other advantages, the micro turbines used in the C-X75 can be run on a range of fuels including diesel, biofuels, compressed natural gas and liquid petroleum gas.[7] The 15kWh lithium ion battery pack weighs 185 kilograms (410 lb).[2]"

I think this could be scaled down in complexity and made affordable.....

Look how small this multi-fuel turbine is.....

I caught up with an old friend yesterday and he rolled out his Tesla sports car for me to take a spin in.

I will say, that is one impressive ride! 150+ miles on a single charge (costs about $10), but the acceleration is amazing.

It only sputters along with a zero to sixty time of 3.7 seconds. :)

Dead stop launches are ridiculous fun as well as quick passes. It is so stealthy with only the rolling tire noise to give it away that you really do not make a scene when doing it (unlike my noisy raucous six cylinder), which is good for avoiding tickets.

The smoothness of this torque and acceleration is just intoxicating. No shifting with a transmission and no slamming of gears. Just point and shoot fun. The only downside is not having the disposable cash to buy one. As you said, out of my range.

Me too.....but a scaled down version, who knows....In any case the idea of a micro-turbine being used to recharge the batteries, is intriguing....What about methanol as a fuel ?

Well the one pictured is a concept car....the one that was cancelled was to be built with an IC engine, and various other modifications....

" The company expects to take advantage of part of the investment in the C-X75 development by using the C-X75 technology in future Jaguars. The hybrid technology could be used on a three-cylinder engine to give it the power of a six-cylinder engine, and the C-X75's sophisticated aerodynamics should also influence future Jaguars, while the high-pressure supercharger technology could be used on future performance Jaguars with four-cylinder engines. Jaguar announced its decision to continue working on five prototypes to be developed until May 2013. Up to three of these will then be sold at auction, while one will go into a future Jaguar museum, and the other will be kept by Jaguar for running demonstrations.[6]"

There is another version called the C-X16, sort of a scaled down version of the version that was slated for limited production, but cancelled.....but this is a concept car as well....

Indeed!! This car is impressive, and well it should be with a price tag of $1.2Million US! The thing that has always bothered me about these new hybrid cars, as well as this Jaguar is the batteries. This Jaguar C-X75 use lithium-ion batteries with 600 volts coursing through their wiring systems. Six hundred volts!! Can you imagine getting into an accident and being pinned against a 600 volt battery? Kind of scarey I think.

...and a gas tank isn't ?... The idea that these micro turbines are so efficient and simple in design, flexible in their fuel choice, light weight, is what these hybrids need to increase range and reliability....One moving part !
