Beware.
Some people by an enclosure rated IP66, the proceed to cut a load of holes in it for cables, switches etc and expect it to still be IP66.

Correction first! As per IEC "IP" stands for "International Protection" and NOT "ingress protection".

Now, the exact application of IP is to protect humans and animals from coming into contact with live parts or with moving parts and to protect machinery/equipment from entry of solid foreign bodies & particles and to protect machinery/equipment from entry of liquids.

Yes! It is the enclosure of the machinery or equipment that should have and offer the required IP protection.

I am reminded of what a motor serfvice engineer told me about 30 years back: "IP is like virginity; guaranteed only until first opening"

Yes! Many people have this misconception.

But, I quote from the IEC Standard on the subject. The IEC mentions very clearly that IP is International Protection.

May be sometime later, I would copy & paste the relevant pages from the IEC.

Just Google NEMA enclosures. My God!!!! It just isn't that difficult.

NEMA Enclosure Types

Now, just move the cursor over one of the below figures and left click two times. It's just like magic!
