One Single Phase kWh Meter to Measure 3 Phase Power

04/20/2013 10:44 AM

Hi Engineers,

I have a mini hydro project. It has a 3 phase balanced alternator, low voltage of 24 -36 volts to charge battery via rectifier and for resistive loads. How can I measure the power by using one single phase household kwh meter ? Where may I get the wiring diagram? Many thanks.

Depends on the meter design....and whether the load is balanced...

You will have to reconfigure your alternators three phases into a "Zig Zag" configuration so that it is putting out single phase power from there your wattmeter will work just fine but your system will now be a 48 - 72 volt output.

A Zig Zag is basicly a delta configuration with one phase shifted one way or the other turning the triangular configuration into a roughly Z shape.

The second option is you just measure one phase and multiply your readings by three assuming that your load is reasonably balanced between the phases.
