Online Study For Mechanical Engineering

04/21/2013 6:08 AM

Hello,

I would like to ask anybody here doing an online schooling for Mechanical Engineering degree. Can you recommend any online school correspondence. Due to busy life I cannot attend a formal education on mechanical engineering.

Thanks.

University of Southern Queensland in Australia has an extensive extrenal program. They have students from all over the world, I have never studied anywhere else, so I have nothing to compare their service to, but I find them pretty good. As for price, again, I am unsure, it may be worth looking to into, if you were after an accreditation that would be globally accepted. If you were not after some kind of accreditation, and just wanted to learn for yourself, google 'Aerostudents' in the U.S. I refer to some of their material from time to time, when I have trouble deciphering certain reference material from U.S.Q. Their content is second to none, in my personal opinion.

I too have studied through USQ and have found their service and help exemplary. Not sure if you can do the whole course through them without attending the odd on campus course which I was required to do.

They will point you in the right direction.

Cheers.

I just found this site, is this good? I am afraid of spending money unless I am sure of the outcome.

All engineering couses worth doing will take a great deal of your time. On line engineering courses are for those who physically cannot attend due to location restraints, not for those who have too busy a lifestyle. To pass the course you are going to have to change your lifestyle, so why not change it sufficiently to attend a local engineering school. I studied for my engineering degree at collage and later for my management post graduate qualifications at night school (my job as a General Manager at the time prevented me from attending regular collage), then for a masters degree on line. Of the three types of study, on line was the hardest to stay motivated because of the lack of feedback and comradeship generated by fellow students.

Go to your garage, build a motorcycle, a car engine or rocket motor, and learn from that......... (pun intended) ... But designing and building something does teach me a lot..

I appreciate you wanting to get an Mechanical Engineering education, but I have to concur with JHHassociates. Most college programs today have some online courses available or even included but IMO, physical presence and hands on activity is required for some ME subjects to acquire a proper understanding. How will you perform Lab tasks via correspondence? As an employer, I personally would question the quality of an online only ME degree (maybe not a Software engineer though), unless you already have an engineering degree and this is to increase your skill set.

This is also coming from someone who arranged his lifestyle (temporarily by the way) to get my BSME as a part time student. I worked full time at a job that would pay my tuition and books, etc., plus shared baby duty with my wife while maintaining a near 4.0 average. That aspect of my story alone won me my first real design engineer job. I doubt an interviewer looking for ME talent would give correspondence school the same credibility.

Thanks for your advice, regarding hands on, all my job responsibilities involves mechanical duties meaning I am familiar on most mechanical aspect of the job, frequently it is the BS ME who will ask me how to execute some critical job as they don't know what to do, I owe it on my experience, but my problem I don't have any means of school credential to match to those registered ME's.
