Motor with Space Heater and Winding Temperature Monitoring

04/22/2013 9:06 PM

Dears,

We are discussing the requirements when ordering the motors used onboard our Drilling Semi Unit, does anybody know the IEC or IEEE requirements with regards to what kind of motor shall be equipped with a space heater (for standstill heating) and wind temperature monitoring device(like: ETD), does it voltage related? capacity related? Operation area related? What is the industrial practice?

And what will be the cost impact on this implementation when ordering?

Thanks and Regards

Lauren

reference to IEC 60034-1 and various IEEE papers on the subject will help.

IEEE papers require purchase of access rights and IEC codes are available for sale on the IEC store sites.

Space heater : From experience, the requirement varies due to geographical location. In far-east where I practice, major clients insist space heaters for outdoor motors rated >5kW. I've seen some clients put 30kW as limit.

Winding temp detector: Most client I worked set >100kW as requirement.

You should check the requirement with your company's or clients corporate electrical standard if available.

I don't recall IEC or IEEE set any requirement for these item as they are user's preference.

Cost impact should be minimal if you order on motor within above range, as it's quite standard for manufacturers to fit them, even if you don't plan to use them.

Dears colleagues,

I think NAMINI is right when said that the requirements varies according to geographical location, more over in tropical and subtropical areas result a good practice to install space heaters in totally enclosed motors outdoor installed above 15 or 45 KW.

The winding temperature tedetector shall be set over the maximum temperature reached by space heater on motor standstill condition, that is when space heater is on.

Typical motors space heater calculation:

Space heater: W=2*D*L

Where: W= heater rating (W)

D= stator core outer diameter (inch)

L= Core length (inch)

Bye
