API 610 11th, Rotor Balancing Test of Overhung Type Pump

Hello, I need some help...

There is a requirement that asking for Rotor balancing test for all type of pumps as per the client spec.

But in the code API 610 11th phrase 6.9.4.1 says that shafts are not required to be balanced. Just in case of BB1 and BB2 rotor balancing can be applicable.

I'm hard to understand why OH type is not applicable for Rotor balancing test....

Could you explain why?

The company I work for uses pretty much every type and design of pump available in the market as we are into oil, gas, energy, mining, fertilizer, and utility production.

We use overhung pumps in an extreme number of applications all of which require that the pump impeller and shaft as an assembled, stable unit are balanced.

We do not balance the shaft separate from the impeller as to do so would be counterproductive.

Balance accuracy of a pump shaft is dependent on the interaction and reaction of each individual component with the other pump shaft components which dictates that all components must be assembled before balancing.

It is my understanding the PAI 610 6.9.4.1 is referring only to the balancing of a shaft when it is not part of the pump shaft assembly as to do so is unnecessary, time consuming, non-productive wasted effort.

If it is as per the specification, then it is something that your firm has contracted to. Unless you can negotiate a waiver or it is prohibited by code the you had best get on with it.

Dear Unanimous Poster,

Requirement is Rotor balancing and not the shaft only. Code is right (shafts are not required to be balanced) and your client is also right (rotors to be balanced). Rotor constitutes shaft+Impeller, which needs to be balanced.
