Sunscreen For Dogs?

04/26/2013 2:42 PM

Okay...so we just got a dog, and his nose is getting burnt.

I know a lot of members and admin are into their pets, so I figured I might get a quicker/better answer here, than wading through a million google hits.

Any recommendations? I was thinking along the lines of that white titanium stuff that the lifeguards use, but am not sure of adverse reactions with pets.

What a cutie!

Your vet would be the best source of advice. Limit exposure to harsh sunlight for awhile and keep him in the shade. Our dog suffered from a similar skin condition on her nose, and she would just rub her nose in the dirt and mud to give a little bit of relief. Just remember, unless he wears a cone, whatever gets put on gets licked off, then shortly thereafter gets puked up!

Good Luck!

Thanks.

I'm running to Petsmart in a few minutes, and picking up whatever they recommend to tied me over. Hopefully someone has already done the trial and error.

Keeping him out of the sun probably isn't an option; at least not an easy one.

Being a painter, my first thought was to.....

But I stopped myself. No need to set the wife off before the weekend even starts.

I had a malamute with a similar problem, my vet told us to use any sunscreen made for children, I believe he specifically recommended the Water-Babies brand.

I've never used it on a dog, but for horses, we always used baby sunscreen without any problems.

Natural oils have some spf factor. Cod liver oil has an spf factor of about 60. That should do the trick. Also drive him crazy trying to lick it off.

Neem sunflower oils about spf 40

Coconut oil at 15.

Re: Sunscreen For Dogs?

Good ideas, but I think Savvy and Jpool hit it.

First of all, this "pet specific" stuff is a ripoff racket.

$12.00 for a small tube of pet sunscreen at Petsmart.

I noted the ingredients, picked him up a squeaky toy, went into a mild rant at checkout, and the checkout lady mentioned getting the stuff for babies.

So I ended up getting a stick of some 50 SPF stuff, (for kids), at the grocery store for $3.50. It's safe enough to put on kids' lips, noses and everything, and Jack doesn't seem to mind it a bit.

Next problem...poison ivy is popping up everywhere, and even if Jack doesn't get it, the wife and kid sure do. It's never bothered me.

You are SOOOOOO RIGHT.

For the same reasons, I always buy cheap Baby shampoo for my dog, no problems in almost 5 years.....Baby stuff is regulated here on price and quality, also probably where you are, so that its very safe.....and does not sting eyes either!

Lucky for me my Pooch avoids the sun (her idea!) as much as possible and walks from shade to shade on hot clear days. My previous Weimaraner got sun burnt, if only mildly, several times.....I then kept her in and the burn was kept wet with water for several hours till it was gone....a pain in the butt to achieve I might add!!! I used to "command" her to stay in a kids paddling pool.....luckily it was her "thighs" and not her nose!!!!

I swear...it's like the self absorbed yuppies have discovered that pets are a great stress reliever, and an entire industry has been spawned around catering to their every, (expensive), whim.

The problem is, as these people purchase their fancy collars, creams and bobbles, they are neglecting the one thing that animals need the most, which is time and attention.

I've come to hate the term, "crate up", which is the act of locking an animal in a tiny cage until they get home from work or whatever. Everybody says it's just fine...I don't agree.

Re: Sunscreen For Dogs?

I agree.

I painted for some clients, (husband and wife attorneys), that have a big black lab...great dog. Not only do they keep him in his crate all day long, but they sedate him. The only time he gets to be a real dog is when they take him to the beach on the weekends.

He's happy enough, but happiness is relative. He could be living a much better life. Too many pet owners think that owning an animal is about their own happiness, rather than that of the animal.

Dogs are frequently smarter than their owners by staying in the shade, if they can.

Beyond that, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide in baby popo creme are harmless. But, he will lick them off in a moment.

Long term internal solution is what I give for a human weight. You prorate. 2000IU Vita. D3 and 2 caps of Bilberry per day.

In a week, they will give quite a decent sunscreen to the eyes, skin, and obviously the nose. Do not increase D3, but you can 2x or 3x Bilberry.

Give a good rub to the pooch from me!

My dog would not allow me to put anything on her head. She would even try to remove the cap if it is put on her head. She did not have this problem as I used to take her out only in mornings and evenings rest of the time she used to be in doors. Small sweet Pom no more in this world.

Re: Sunscreen For Dogs?

Sorry for your loss Suresh.

Thanks leveles, that's interesting, but it sounds, (possibly), expensive, and definitely like something I could screw up.

Fortunately, the stick screen seems to be working; his nose is looking much better this morning. I'll just add that little routine to my morning chores.

He's got free reign on my 1 acre, and 2 weeks after getting him, he already knows to stay in the yard. He's usually waiting on the front porch when I get home from work.

It's not a myth that shelter pets are the best.

Summers coming, remember dogs dont sweat, try to keep your dog from getting too hot. My dog sees a rabbit off he goes, comes back with his tongue hanging all the way out and panting like a choo-choo train. If you think your dog is too hot, hose him down, but first run the water until it comes out of the hose cool. Shade is also important and in really hot areas a kiddie pool is good.

Yeah, he's already spoiled rotten. I've had dogs before, just none that got sunburned.

Never really thought about it, but my neighbor has horses, and he has to treat them with sunscreen too.

Really cute dog Kram....

What works on humans may not work on a dog, and in fact your may worsen the condition or the dog may suffer from the sun screen.

I'd check with the Vet first before applying any topical solution on your pup!

Thank heaven for dogs!!!!

How's it going Moosie?

I'm glad you didn't tell me that I needed to hire a civil engineer.

The ingredients in the pet specific stuff are almost identical to the stuff for babies. So far, so good.

I've always loved my pets, but I haven't figured out how PC applies to humans, much less animals. Can I sue my neighbor because his older dog bullied my puppy?

When I was a kid, you just got a dog, loved it, and took care of it. Jack seems pretty happy in his old school hell. I'll look out for his sunburn, but if he goes off and gets bit by a snake...that's on him. If he lives, he won't screw with a snake again.

Same goes for humans...some will live, and some will die; but we can't eliminate the freedom that allows them to go get bit.

A feral cat or two will keep down the rodent population, and the snakes will look for easier hunting. Had 3 prarrie rattlers in the barn when I moved in 4 years ago. None since, no mice turds in the tool boxes either.

I got off track; I was talking about the human snakes.

My semi-feral cat died last year. She liked to kill rodents, but they're hard to come by...she had to compete with black snakes, copper heads, cotton mouths, hawks, owls, foxes, and other semi-feral cats. Rodents don't fare too well around here.

That's good to hear.

One of the reasons I cut my grass, is to keep snakes away from the house. The hawks are like predator drones, and the snakes don't like to expose themselves. Jack likes to go off and play in the tall weeds though, and I'm sure he would think that a snake is just another toy to play with.

Thanks suresh. The sunscreen for children seems to be working fine. I also got some 100 SPF lotion for his belly. He likes laying on his back with his legs splayed out, right out in the full sun.
