WIFI Protected Access

05/03/2013 3:11 PM

Greetings All,

I am in the process of replacing my single band router with a dual band. Was thinking a 450/450 (N900) series.

Half of my devices run exclusively on WPA-PSK and the other half run WPA2.

My question - will a WPA capable router "see" my WPA-PSK and WPA2 devices or does the router have to exclusively run WPA-PSK as well as WPA2?

I have searched for N900 routers that explicitly state that they support both WPA-PSK and WPA2 to no avail.

I bought an ASUS-N66U last week. It supported WEP, WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK, WPA-Enterprise, and WPA2-Enterprise.

The N66U saw my WPA-PSK devices but did not see my WPA2 devices.

After too many late night sessions on the phone with customer support, they ascertained that the N66U was not compatible with my WPA devices and I returned the router. (Yes, the WIFI set-up fields were entered correctly and verified on three occasions with Cust Support)

I know most of the dual band are WEP capable and while my wireless devices are WEP compatible also, I do not want to use that encryption mode due to the typical sloooooower speed.

Any suggestions/recommendations on Dual Band N900 Routers that run both WPA-PSK and WPA2 compatible encryption would be appreciated.

Thank you for your help and expertise!

Regards KJK/USA

Have you tried to upgrade your software with something compatible? Do you have 'Wifi Protected Setup' disabled?

Hello SE,

Yes, I have upgraded the firmware on the devices and router. As far as compatible, I am limited to the firmware upgrades. Wifi protection was enabled. Thanks for the link, every little bit helps!

I'm note sure the speed on current airport extremes but mine is capable of WPA / WPA2. Had an issue with a Nintendo DS before I switched on WPA. But in the one you selected can you not set up a guest account with WPA and a main one with WPA2 to solve the issue, I agree not fantastic...but may solve the problem

Hi 3 Phase,

Guest account sets up in WEP mode. I will keep researching. I think my biggest issue is compatibility between the different modes. Thank you for your input!

I don't use integrated wifi and router configs any more. I use a single router (ClearOS on an old PC) with DHCP service and use Access points with wide channel separation for wifi. That way, if a wifi radio fails, I only replace the access point, not the whole subnet/router.

Also, it solves the problem of multiple access/security problems. One access point can be configured for ab and g and WEP or WPA and another for N and WPA-2. If I have security issues then I can use a wifi router as the access point and tunnel it to the internet through a dedicated Ethernet connection to an additional Ethernet port on the ClearOS router machine.

Hello Deefburger,

Now that is exactly what I was looking for but could not quite convey it with words. You have pointed me in the direction I want to be going.

Thanks for the input!

Regards - KJK/USA
