  1. Plug a memory stick into the USB port
  2. Copy the data files onto the stick.
  3. Eject the stick.
  4. Plug the stick into the second PC's USB port.
  5. Move the files from the stick into the second PC.
  6. Eject the stick.

Well, the original posting has laid dormant for several hours, so the transfer cannot be time-dependent or urgent. Otherwise it would have been done by now.

If the data is text only, it is possible using the serial ports, but it is hardly trivial to do so.

Ethernet File Sharing is MUCH easier.

There is a special USB cable made for plugging 2 computers together and sharing data while eliminating any hassles associated with doing it this way. The link below is the manufacturers website. It can be purchased at amazon.com among other sites.

http://www.j5create.com/our-products/wormhole-switches/juc400.html

I am sure other companies manufacture something like this. If you can't find one of these cables in your part of the world, the above mentioned USB stick procedure by PWSlack (GA) is a good alternative or 2 LAN cables and an inexpensive LAN switch will work to.

Normal USB cables or serial cables (slow) are not designed for this. If you can't find the J5 Wormhole cable, do a search for a "USB transfer cable".

What you are apparently wanting to do is called 'peer-to-peer networking'. I think you can do it with just a cross-over ethernet cable if both computers have ethernet ports. Google 'peer to peer network' or 'P2P'. Are you using Windows? What version?

What type of network switch or router do you have? Is it very old? Are you using windows? If so, which version? You will probably need 2 straight cables, the last time I needed a crossover cable was while using an old 10mb switch about 15 years ago.

You want to move the operating systems, too? I don't think you can do that.

Just switch the hard drives.

I have tried the usb method using one of the devices for the job. It involved installing software, activating it each time, navigating to the folders via an unfamiliar 3rd party system. There was a lot of configuring to do. It only worked sometimes, and then slowly. Annoying.

I plugged in ethernet to the pc, and into my router, and apart from assigning sharing preferences to folders, that was it really. Folders can be used as if they were on the same pc, slightly slower access times. Windows XP

You could buy 1 of these cables HERE on a popular auction site e**y.

It is listed as

High Speed USB 2.0 Data Link Cable PC To PC Data Transfer Easy Copy Transfer

but then you have to wait for it to be deliverd so that might take too long as well

Re: Data Transfer PC to PC with USB Port?

I just plug in a USB HDD and boot a Linux cd. I run dd and create an image on the HDD. Then I put the cd into the other machine and attach the USB HDD with the image on it and boot into Linux again, dd the image to the internal drive and then reboot without the cd and the USB HDD. Done.

If it fails, then I can redo the transfer from the image I still have on the USB HDD.

I have also used USB HDD adaptors and removed the drive I want to copy and plug the removed drive into the USB adaptor and then used that as my master "image" for the new PC.

Another method I have used on bench setup of new machines is to boot into Linux from CD on all new machines and the imagable machine. I share the HDD of the imageable machine and mount the share on the new machines and then dd the share to the new drives. All of this is done after the imageable machine has been setup and had sysprep.exe run on it to make it "fresh" if it is a new Windows setup. If it is a new Linux setup then there is no need for sysprep.

If you have the tool and the connectors you can create your own ethernet crossover cable.

Looking at the connector of one end, with the connector contact side facing up and the cable hanging down, arrange the wires in the following order left to right:

Or/wt | Or | GnWt | Bu | BuWt | Gn | BwWt | Bw --- First end

GrWt | Gr | OrWt | Bw | BwWt | Or | BuWt |Bu ---- Second end

Or = Orange Wt = White Gr = Green Bu = Blue Bw = Brown

This crosses over the green pair with the orange pair and the blue pair with the brown pair. Green and Orange are the primary transmit/receive pairs for ethernet. Blue and brown are backup or unused generally.

With this cable you can connect the ethernet ports of both machines directly without a hub or switch. Then manually config the ethernet of both machines so that one is 192.168.1.1 and the other 192.168.1.2 and make make the gateway on the machine at 1.1 the 1.2 address and the gateway on the machine at 1.2 the 1.1 address so each machine sees the other as the gateway.

Now, the two machines can share and transfer whatever you want between them at the full speed of the network connection.

So, how about using your RJ45 cross-over cable and a copy of 'Laplink' or one of the similar 'free' transfer utilities on the web?

You get everything transferred - takes a while of course. depending on the spec of the slower machine.
