Hardfacing Welding Rod Without Chrome and Nickel

05/09/2013 1:02 AM

Friends,

In a glass manufacturing company , there are wear prone components like Collect crushers, Conveyor screws, chutes etc.. I was told by the maintenance manager at the Glass plant that they need an electrode for hardfacing without a trace of Chrome and Nickle , The required hardness is > 60 HRc

Has any one faced a similar issue.

are you aware of an welding electrode that will give a deposit hardness of 60 Hrc and have no Nickle and Chromium

rgds

Sanjay

Carbon steel electrodes or MIG rolls.

in case you need some rust resistance - phosphor bronze electrodes.

You could consider cobalt cemented tungsten carbide hardfacing,

but it would probably require something other than stick welding for application.

I know it is available as a powdered alloy for application by powder welding or plasma spraying, but I don't know if it can be applied by stick.

Something like this is a good candidate, but it isn't in stick electrode form. There are several processes possible for hardfacing with powdered alloy.

.

Also the first two hardfacing powders on this pdf are tungsten carbide in cobalt and have no nickel or chromium.

10.5.13 Sanjay, The best guys to talk to are Esab and L&T. Eutectic. Sandvik may also be able to chip in with some solution. Reclamation of forging dies and excavator buckets routinely takes place. I am not very sure about cost benefit analysis as well as substrate compatibility in your industry, though Vinay Isloorkar

Sandvik, Hughes, Christianson and other makers of downhole drilling and coring bits have used a silver solder alloy containing sintered tungsten carbide and or PCD for years, I would consult with them on application methods, most common I have seen is with a plain old oxy-acetelene rosebud torch.

I state under correction, but I don't know that there is such an electrode...

When one does hard-facing, the requirement for no chrome or nickel makes this a difficult one.Did he give a reason, eg corrosion / galvanic action due to dissimilar metals ?

The equipment you mention (my opinion) does not preclude using an alloy rod such as Stellite, but it does contain chrome and nickel in the alloy.

Not sure you can get there from here. What have they been using? Most if not all hard surfacing welding electrodes have Cr and Ni in them, that's what makes the surface harden and wear resistant. Have you looked into some of the ceramics that are out there now. I just purchased two new crusher bars for rock and concrete unit that are ceramic. Work great and have increased service live by 3 times over the old carbide units. Just a thought.

Found a foundry out of TN that makes them. Do a google search for ceramic crusher bars. I don't have the info with me I am on the road for the next two weeks.
