How Are You at Geolocating?

05/17/2013 10:47 AM

Can you figure out where in the world you are based on some scant details such as shrubbery / random buildings / trees?

Try this little in-browser game then!

http://geoguessr.com/

It gives you a random Google street view and you have to place a marker as to where abouts you think it is! Try your best without Google'ing names of buildings.

My score was - 7390, what's yours?

<this random annoyance has been brought to you by the letter "M">

I dunno: a dark cellar; a cave deep underground; the Marianas trench, or, somewhere in space with no galaxies.

How did I do?

Geoguesser does not seem to like my Firefox. All I get is the same black screen that Randall displayed.

I got 10,054. My biggest miss was guessing a location in Spain that was actually in Cuba.

12804 points after lots of goes where I could never get in the right continent.

I just kept getting a simple road in a barren landscape with nothing to go on. I was beginning to think that you guys all knew something about road markings which I hadn't been initiated into.

Look for the kangaroo signs along the road!

Other than that go by the road.

Gravel Road = Canada

Dirt Road = US

Mud = Asia

No Road = France

Canal beside road= Holland

Tar on raod = US

Cobble Stone = Germany

5 lanes in one direction = US

Bushes to the edge of the raod = Italy

no bushes = Africa

small side strip = Europe

no side strip mountanius = South America

And so on.

Maybe somebody else has some more rules of thumb!

Have fun!

There is a box at the top of the page, above the map, with the code in it: just copy & paste.

"There is a box at the top of the page, above the map, with the code in it: just copy & paste."

Sounds absolutely reasonable to me - BUT: I tried copy-&-paste on the box earlier; only got first handful of characters (what actually SHOWS in the box; truncated). Tried using mouse to highlight start of link, and holding down right arrow key until all 780 characters had finally gone by, but it didn't stay highlighted first few attempts. Finally got one to highlight; copied, pasted, but it failed to connect. Tried again, and pasted into TinyURL, got short version made up; it also failed to connect. Tried yet again, and clicked "inspect element". A MUCH longer segment showed near bottom on-screen, and I again did the highlight-and-slide to get it in its entirety. Put into browser, but link didn't work. Pasted it into TinyURL box, got failure when trying both the "raw" version that they display, AND the shortened version. "Inspect Element" also offered options of "Copy Inner HTML" and "Copy Outer HTML" (may not be exact, but close enough to recognize). Not sure what either actually means - but the results seemed to be the same link address with some additional character strings within double sets of quotation marks. They didn't work as links either as-is, nor when the double-quoted section was deleted. Didn't try them in TinyURL.

The "Inspect Element" display didn't offer a means to go back to the GeoGuesser page, which was still visible as background surround. Finally just closed the Inspect Element screen, but that also closed the original page.

I didn't try to copy or otherwise use the second box at top, only the first one.

If ever this site asks me to fill out a survey questionnaire, it will NOT get a decent ranking for Ease of Navigation!

What a funny quirk... My score was with a fresh game. It looks like you (Randall) were given the exact same spots which you already had a good idea from my locations. Looks like the Geoguessr people need to do some work

Not a funny quirk. I cheated as I indicated I was going to by:-

Of course if you had just provided that URL then I wouldn't have had the advantage of seeing your answers.
