Water-cooled copper vacuum cavity's water leakage

05/31/2007 8:25 AM

Hi,

I need your help.

I have a water-cooled copper vacuum cavity which get a water leakage problem.

The leakage gap is very small(not over 0.5mm).

Who can tell me how I can seal it in a normal temperature environment, because

too high temperature will destroy the vacuum. If vacuum leaks the

vacuum will be discarded.

Thank you!

Michael.Shang

What caused the leak? erosion or broken weld or what? Can you bring the system down to "line it"with a coating?

Thanks for your reply.

The erosion caused the leak.

The system can be down to "line it" with a coating.

Do you have the detailed description for coating method to sealing it?

Michael

Look at reply #3.....you also need to understand how to use 2 component epoxy glue, read the instructions and remember what i said in #3....

How bad is the leak? If it is a very narrow crack or a very small hole, a quick way to repair it is to patch it with a 2-part epoxy putty 9e.g. Milliput)

...you also need to know what actually caused the leak, erosion from cavitation for example will continue to eat away at the casing......your leak will return.....but if due to improper welding or sealing, then doing a good job with two part epoxy and fiber glass or carbon fiber will probably fix it forever.....

Remember to slightly abrade the area and to clean it well before sealing (methylated spirits or similar, but no petroleum or other products that leave a residue), use surgical gloves to keep finger marks away from the area and to protect your fingers a little.

Remember that almost all fibers are very sharp and can damage fingers THROUGH such gloves.....clean wounds carefully and keep dirt out!!

Thanks a lot for your help.

Fixing the leak with two part epoxy and fiber glass or carbon fiber is a good

method.

Is there a special weld technology which could fix the seal problem in the normal

temperature conditions?

I've ever heard of someone doing that by spreading some special metal mud around the leak area first and then drying the face or spraying something on the face.

Maybe it is a special low(normal)-temperature weld technology.

Sorry I only give a blurred description for it.

Even fixing the leak is not quite fixing the problem, erosion from cavitation can be a devil to stop fully. Its really a design problem i would say.....but as to fixing such a design problem, sorry, I cannot help you there....

In your case I would seal it up with what ever method you decide on and give it say 6 months, to see if any further leaks develope.....

You are very kind.

This discussion is very helpful for me.

I am a sevice engineer for accelerator, I need a seal method which is anti-radiation and anti-heat.

Because two part epoxy glue with fiber glass or carbon fiber is friable during long

time radiation.

Do you know which method or glue is anti-radiaiton and anti-heat?

Thank you.
