Pipe Thickness for Clamp on Ultrasonic Flowmeter

06/03/2013 9:00 AM

Dear All,

We have purchased Clamp on Ultrasonic flowmeters. Manufacturer recommends that these flowmeters should be used on a pipe with thickness of 4mm. We have pipe lines installed with the thickness of 10mm & 20mm. Please advise how can we use these flowmeters on these pipe lines ?

If it's a Siemens FUx, you can get different transducers (sized for different pipe wall thicknesses) to use with the electronics box.

Quite. The forum doesn't know what model of flowmeter this is. The original poster needs to discuss the problem with the manufacturer using a .

Put it that way! The general wants you to fight tanks and you bought a small firearm. Can you fight the tank?

With difficulty!

I think the key factor here is the wall thickness. You need to spec up the flow meter to match your pipes. Hopefully it is a Siemens and other transducers are avaialble.

One more idea related to wall thickness. Not knowing more about your system you will have to answer a lot more questions after this: How about making a small part of the pipes lower wall thickness - say 4 mm - and measure your flow there? This comes without warranty as we dont know what and where and why you have those pipes.

PPurchase the correct flowmeter for the application, not the cheapest.

Whoever specified the current meters picked the wrong ones.

Been there, done that, have the hat and the t shirt. We just welded a pad around 10 mm T that contoured the OD of the pipe.

Check your current flow meter design specs - there's must be a range of thickness and materials you may apply - if not you you have ordered a wrong flow meter for your application.

For more info, please access the website of several brands of flow meters for more info etc.

Contact the clamp-on meter manufacturer.

Only they can tell you if it is possible and if so, how to do this.

All heads have to suppress/ ignore the first reflection from the generator to the tube wall from the measurement. Then the second density transition from metal to liquid needs to be suppressed, before meaningful measurements can take place. A sensor set for 4mm or less takes in 10mm or more's reflexion fully in the measurement.

You get nonsense, that you can fix only with the manufacturer, if at all.

Sorry.
