Best adhesion for ABS pipe

05/31/2007 10:13 PM

I require to bond an ABS tube that will fit into a round cavity of another ABS molded part (elbow). I have been using an MEEK (solvent) based adhesive to bond the two parts together, but since the tube is extruded it cannot have perfect circularity, so the MEEK based adhesive can't fill all the gaps around the OD of the tube and the inner wall of the circular cavity of the molded elbow. Since this is a subaquatic application (inside my pool) I still get some leakage.

Can anyone recommend a gluing agent or method that could indeed fill any potential void between the two parts ?

Thanks much!

From experience, the gel-like solvent in PVC pipe adhesive tends to work satisfactorily with ABS. Check out a local plumbers' merchant that specialises in solvent-weld waste piping and buy a small bottle of this for experimentation?

Hello, usualy for larger PIPES, like 4", DI this procedure have to steeps, first applies the PREP (what Im think you are using) and then the ABS glue. Ask for the indicated stuff in your local hardware.

Actually, if your pipe has a few enomalies that keep it from being of proper perportions, I would recommend a bit of time spent to sand the deformity out of the incertion pipe. Further more, the ABS/PVC glues available on the market are quite remarkable in their ability to start the fussion process with in a matter of seconds, thus, causing your pipe to start in the chemical process of liquifying the outer shell for the weld process.

If your gaps are only minor, say less then 2mm difference from coupling to incerted pipe, the liquification of the two pipes will blend and negate any enomalies of non-round sections of the incerted pipe to the coupling. Having 30 plus years in working with plastics in the electrical trade, you learn how to trim-true oblong or egg-shaped pipe ends for a tolorable weld fit.

If your pipe is more then 3mm difference from being a snug fit, you can always shave the incertion pipe down to allow for a 1mm or 2mm shim/bushing to be used in helping close the gap for a tight fit. Remember, once the PVC glue is applied to the coupling end and then to the incertion pipe end, you only have a matter of seconds before the weld process is instituded and the materials will start to deform in the open air.

Good luck in your efforts.
