Is This So Overmatched and Costly Electrode Neccessary

06/13/2013 7:50 AM

in WPS prepared and approved in my last project in SAUDI Jubail for Duplex :ASTM B366(UNS NO:N08825)42Ni-21.5Cr-3Mo-2.3Cu, it is found that the chemical composition analysis for the electrode(AWS 5.11:ENiCrMo-3)/ is as such: nickle 64.4 chromium:22.27 molybdenum:8.72 copper:0.01 for AWS A5.14 , here is my question why the electrode nickle composition is way too higher than that in basemetal nearly by 30%(42 nickle of base metal but 64 nickel in electrode). if it is a method to guarantee enough nickle especially in welds , is it wastefully unneccessary ,and in this case can we replace this electrode with one of equal nickle value, and in similar case what determines the electrode selection

This is the third time you have asked THE SAME QUESTION!!

The answer will not change to allow you to use a cheaper rod.

You can only cut so many corners and still produce a quality product.

So, what do you want here?

The cheapest product you can build, regardless of quality?

Or do you want a quality product regardless of cost?

The forum awaits your response.

yelp

The answer will not change to allow you to use a cheaper rod.

if this selection for alloy steel is based upon established rules or chart accepted widely for a long time worldwide in this industry, then i have to give up on trying an equally matched one; what i have to do is so simple, just follow the established guide by manufacturer for electrodes for welding instead of insistently trying going deeper for mechanical or chemical rules or logic for me to reach a satisfactory answer when it comes to some rarely used steel and then neither guide nor chart is available.

You can only cut so manycorners and still produce a quality product.

no , i have been just trying going deeper in this topic to check for a general rule to guide my selection in the future or exactly speaking you can say it would help me better understand the choice advised by manufactor or any institute.

So, what do you want here?

not to be rude or anything , neither am i doubting what you are capable of in this industry, have you ever advised or chosen any consumables based primarily upon mechanical or chemical value(that's all available from the manufacturer and base metal value is known) , in another word theoretically, instead of experience or any industry handbook or chart .

The cheapest product you can build, regardless of quality?

quality is above all

Or do you want a quality product regardless of cost?

The forum awaits your response.

You have my permission to give it hell with some old rusty 6011 or 6013 farmer rods and call it good.

Is that the answer you wanted from some anonymous stranger on some website who has given no indication of having any welding credentials or authority in your project?

Why don't you ask the 'weld engineer' who wrote the original specificatio that was then tested to cover his ass, and the company's ass. Welds on products are 'designed' with a specific rod type, and a specific procedure to produce a specific quality of weld. If you vary from these specifications you'll probably get a product that will fail due to defects in the HAZ (welding term) I have seen a fart produce a defective weld due to a jiggle on a torch due to the strain. Why do you want to screw with a proven procedure?

Are you a bean counter. The question and the way it is stated makes it seem like you are. Only a bean counter would look at this and say I am wasting metal alloy. When in reality the only thing being waste is the ink to ask the question. Over the last 40 plus years this is not the 1st time I have heard this type of question. Always winds up screwing the process if it is acted on.

My 2 cents
