Water Soluble Bio-Safe Cutting Fluids

06/17/2013 2:30 AM

Hi people

Can anyone recommend brands and types of water soluble cutting fluids for a small workshop with intermittent machining hours ?

We want to avoid bacterial growth when not being used

minimise evaporation losses

minimise atomisation into atmosphere as we dont have a fume extractor

We will be using 1020 , 1045 , 4140 , 4340 steels for 99 % of work and the rest being cast iron and aluminium.

products available in australia are preferred

thankyou folks

We use Rocol Multisol in our lathe & mill. The lathe is used perhaps a couple of times each week whereas the mil will sometimes go a couple of weeks between uses. We don't have any trouble with bacteria, hard to say if we get evaporation but, as the fluid drains back into the coolant pump sump, I would have thought it was minimal. We are cutting stainless 304 & 316, nickel alloy steel, aluminium & Delrin.

I can't comment on the rocol but we have been very satisfied with the Hocut 795. have been using it for ~5 years. Evaporation of the water is to be expected. Would suggest the use of refractometer and maintain the concentration between 5 - 6.5 percent.

I solved my problems with mold and fungal growth by using a mixture of WD40 and automatic transmission oil. 50/50 Drill bits last a lot longer but there is some losses due to evaporation of the WD 40. You will still get some smoke on hot turning so if that is a problem then ignore my suggestion. There is also some additives to prevent this growth from occurring not sure of the names but used them at one factory I worked in.

Hi I have a similar requirement, but haven't bother to ask the question......

However, I was interested in a recent article which suggested the use of copper door handles in hospitals as the copper is effective at suppressing MRSA and other "super-bugs" ...... so why aren't we both putting some strips of copper / copper wires in our sumps?

As a semi-aside (but to illustrate the power of copper in this sort of situation) copper compounds are regularly used as garden fungicides and copper is also very effective at suppressing tree / plant growth.
