Bearing Moving on Steam Heated Shaft

06/16/2013 6:31 AM

We have a problem with a bearing moving on the steam (160 degrees) heated shaft of a large machine here. The bearing tapered sleeve seems to move along the shaft away from the machine.

The shaft was machined and sleeved in situ about 9 months ago, after there were problems with some shaft damage. Not sure what they did, but it pushes the bearing through the block where it ends up resting against the end of the block.

Any thoughts on how we might stop this happening?

Clamp a two-piece shaft collar against the bearing.

This statement, "after there were problems with some shaft damage. Not sure what they did" assures that we will never know what happened to the shaft, or bearing.

Do as Tornado said, or weld it in place.

Adapter sleeves:

Withdrawal sleeves:

Can you attach a sketch detailing your machine/bearing area?

Set screws loosening from thermal expansion/contraction cycles (steam can work wonders)?

Similar to cooling gland packing try for bearings.
