We have a member, and his son, who have been building a very interesting rotary engine. There are several discussions here at CR4 about their progress.

Follow this search and have a look at any thread. Too bad all of the threads aren't in one place, you'll just have to drive around to see them.

ADoyle88 produced this preview and is building the prototype. It's very interesting, but full size.

Yeah...

The Doyle rotary isn't really 'smallish'.

I suppose it is legitimate to call them "rotary" but I think of the Spitfire engines and others of that ilk when I hear the term.

The Spitfire had the famous Rolls Royce Merlin V12 engine. I think your thinking of the radial aircraft engine like the Pratt & Whitney Wasp engines. Neither of these aircraft piston engines would count as a rotary engine.

Sorry, but what you said is TOTAL and UTTER RUBBISH.

The engines you mentioned are fairly conventional PISTON engines, not rotary.!!!

Read here:-

Rolls-Royce Merlin

and here:-

Wankel_engine

Now do you understand the differences?

What happened to you, did your wife say "No." last night.

I was simply wrong.

The engines I had in mind were Radial Engines, I used the wrong word.

Apologies to the OP for the interuption. Carry on chaps.

Just follow the practice of total indifference to anon posts.

Ignore them.

Don't read or respond to them and your life will be much simpler.

Finally anons probably don't have wives, or girlfriends, or friends for that matter.

Just consider them persona non grata.

Yes.

Many different ones are available off-the-shelf.

How about a full size 6 chamber rotary, 1000 hp non turbo, or a 4 Chamber unit in a jet boat 935 hp.

In the early 60s or before there was a small rotary engine powered Swedish snowmobile call Sno Trek- however it still might be too big as it was about 12/14 HP, may be some of those still around.

This is a rather specialised area, you might not find too many people who have developed such engines in their garage.

There are a couple of UK companies, Rotron and UAV, who make Wankel engines for microlights and UAVs. I believe they both evolved from the Norton motorcycle wankel engine programme.

More along the lines of the size you are looking at, there is a Japanese company, here , making wankel rotary engines for model aircraft.

It is surprising there are not more. The design is ideal for model aircraft and small powered tools due to its' high power to weight ratio and simplicity. Also, the disadvantages of this design have much less impact in these applications.
