Wireless Home Networking Question

07/05/2013 3:21 PM

I have an AT&T Uverse home network that has a wireless 2Wire router (also wired to the house via ethernet), two desktop computers (wireless connection), one laptop (wireless connection), two hardwired printers (color inkjet and b/w laser), one wireless printer (color inkjet) and smartphone access.

I would like to add my b/w laser fax machine/printer to the network, but I'm not sure what the best approach is. The machine has a USB port, as well as in/out phone jacks. The phone jack is hooked up to a dedicated phone line that is not part of the UVerse VOIP line. My thought is to buy a wireless print server, but I also thought about using another wireless router. Is there a preference to either method, or is there a better way?

Leave the b/w printer hardwired to one of the PCs then share the printer on the network. That way, all machines on the network will be able to print to it.

As to its fax ability... the software for the fax portion of the printer may not have the ability to accept an incoming fax job from a networked machine. Usually only the better fax/printer machines have that ability.

The b/w laser printer is hardwired to a PC and I can print from anywhere on the network.

The b/w printer/fax can't be hardwired due to the location - well it can be, but I don't want to put holes in the wall and run wires. This is why I was thinking of a wireless print server.

Apple Airport routers are great, have a usb port for printing and hard drive(any usb drive becomes a nas), and support wireless printing from iphones as well. Easy software, work with pc's , macs, pretty much anything. Also the security is good. If they are a few bucks extra, you will make it back in time spent setting it up. Apple are also good about firmware updates, so years from now they will still work.
