Where can I Purchase Molded Pulp?

07/05/2013 2:36 AM

Hi there,

I have my own mold. Anyone know where I can buy the material or molded pulp packaging easily?

Thanks in advance.

Jesse

Yes. Anyone who uses an internet search engine to discover the contact details of moulded pulp packaging knows this.

I just looked up that very thing. Before anybody shouts 'goolglineer' or anything else, I found myself on the website for some band, so have been punished enough.

You're right! In fact there are about 107,000 results that took 0.25 seconds to retrieve.

I haven't the faintest idea where JesseConant can find pulp material. I live on a fairly large, suburban populated island but I do know of a sawmill nearby. That might not be suitable pulp material for this mold but it is a start. The cost of shipping this pulp might quickly make it to expensive. I wonder how many metric tons of pulp will be needed annually? I do like the idea of using pulp. Recycling is always a good idea.

I don't think you can buy raw material such as pulp.

well, look up paper making techniques ...

Become a recycler.......

Get a vat/mixer, a grinder/shredder, screens, you may need some binders as well as maybe bleach, and then Start collecting old newspapers............ And your on Your way.....

Nothing is not always as simple as it seems..

This company from my former home town sells 'craft pulp', the bleached, unformed product from which tissues and egg crates are made. They sell in shipload quantities.

Dear Jesse,

I understand you have a mould, and that you want the material required to produce some shaped figure, maybe similar to this one:

As suggested by a previous post, and unless you intend relatively big scale production (standard sample test shipments go by tons), it is better for you to make your own pulp.

Get the the dried pulp from manufacturer for sampling, is a good option if you have some factory nearby. You can even get a couple of sheets (some 5kg each, depending on sizing) for free.

If so, you should be familiar with the main process paramenters:

-Pulp characteristics: colour, composition (short fiber/long fiber), ºSR (Schopper-Riegler dewatering grade), required consistency.

-Mould position: bottom to be flooded, or top to be dipped.

-Vacuum: required or not? Willl depen if you want to make a decorative paper mask, or some more resistant element (i.e: model scenery, real package, etc. )

It this is too much for you, and only intend to make a DIY pulp moulded piece, shredded newspaper, left soaking overnight, and later blended briefly, can do nicely for testing purposes.

With a picture of your mould and a clear statement of your objective, a more valuable help could be provided. Do not hesitate to ask (properly).

Salu2 cordiales,

Abel.
