Powder Coated Kitchen Cabinets

07/09/2013 4:47 AM

Hi guys

I need little suggestions and recommendations from your side. We use sheet metal to manufacture different products. we are already making Lockers, laboratory cabinets, Almiras etc. Now i want to expand my business and thinking of introducing Powder coated steel Cabinets (Both floor and wall mounted) for domestic kitchens. I know there are some people out who are already doing this thing. But i am little concern about powder coating. If we powder coat steel there is possibility that it will ripped of by minor scratches which will not be ideal for kitchen use then.

I wonder if there is any powder coating technique which is scratch resistant and which can last long for at least 8-10 years .

This one is an interesting post. The original poster is looking for someone to give something away that the original poster can use for the next 8-10 years to make money through sales.

Any takers? lyn, perhaps?

I am working in Pakistan. and still no one has started it here. so i dont think any one will loose his business if he just give away some tips/idea. After all its material science forum and if some one is good with powder coating he can suggest me better ways or some alternative.

Why wouldn't you contact a few paint suppliers with your questions? They do have "experts" right there that are paid to answer your questions.

This is like having a toothache and posting in CR4 for advice instead of seeing a dentist.

I suggest you DLC(diamond like coating) all of them to prevent scratches. it might slightly drive your costs through the roof but the scratch issue will disappear

You aren't going to find a coating that won't scratch.

I can wreck anything you put in front of me, within seconds.

This is about the toughest coating out there:

I don't know what you are using to coat your current products, but my experience with electrical control enclosures has been that powder coating on steel is at least as durable and scratch-resistant, if not better, than those painted with a good industrial enamel paint. It can give a nice gloss, it comes in many colors, and it forms an even, smooth coating. One of my major enclosure suppliers even uses powder coating to "paint" the snowplows that a different branch of the company manufactures, and I would think that snowplowing is a pretty abrasive and severe environment to endure.

Ye certainly powder coating is better the enamel paints. and for me also it works well so far. I am just asking as a precautionary measure, if any.

I would say you have some how ease my mind by giving +1 to powder coating.

Most fine finishes are plastic coated to prevent damage in transit and during installation. The installer then removes the plastic sheet. This is seen regularly on Stainless Steel, PVC, glass, mobile phone screens.....

Shoaib,

I think powder coating is the best solution. We had painted our industrial products with powder coating and we found it quite good solution. But you have to get the items powder coated by some vendor, as to install a plant for powder coating will be quite expensive in initial stages. You can also check up imported kitchen platforms available in your country.

It will be hard to beat good powder coating. Good colours and very durable. As soon as it is off the line wrap it in foam or similar soft material and get it into the carton for protection. You should have no problem unless transport is rough handling the shipment.

I used to do mechanical design work for a gaming company that produced a line of machines for video poker, slots and other games. While all our front doors were hard chromed the cabinets and optional top boxes were powder coat. These boxes took a lot of abuse, some even being installed on the street in some countries. I even remember seeing some 10 year old machines that we took as trade-in's on new machines. The old cabinets were cleaned and resold as "used" machines, though with upgraded components and software. You could stand one next to a brand new box and couldn't tell the difference. Minor scratches could even be cleaned up with a black Sharpie permanent marker.

Powder coat beats the tar out of baked enamel and trust me when I say Casinos are all about esthetics!!

Research ' Maine" and "Aviation", "Industrial" as part of your search. What do these guys use? I'll bet the same names come up when cross referencing these fields. I know that the mining industry has some very durable finishes, also. Whether or not they include to color and gloss you need is another story . Also, Aviation paints such as Imron, and marine paints such as Awlgrip. (Linear polyurethanes are quite hard, and have been used also in commercial kitchens etc.) We used a certain Epoxy paint specified for us when painting a Hospital Emergency room and hallways. It was tough enough to resist abrasion by the gurneys that were pushed in all hours of the day and night. Seek and ye shall find. Remember, these are cabinets, not skateboards. As mentioned before , touch ups are available.
