Looking for 1 1/2" Left Hand Thread Bolt or Threaded Stock

07/12/2013 3:56 PM

Granted I am pretty good at internet searches but I have myself stumped a bit on this one.

I am rebuilding the suspension system on our old Case 1150 track loader and a main suspension part is missing and no longer available so I have to fabricate one myself. It's the cross link rod and all it is is a 1 1/2" rod with left hand threads on one end and right hand on the other ( basically a giant turnbuckle of sorts).

Anyone know where I can get a grade 5 bolt 4 - 6 inches long or threaded stock in short lengths (less than a foot) so I can finish fabricating my last part for the suspension rebuild?

A left hand nut to go with it would be nice too!

And yes I do have a lathe but I really hate trying to make my own threaded rods when they are this big.

1-1/2 by 6 or 12 TPI?

Try McMaster carr, but left hand taps are $154.

And they stop at 1" for left hand dies.

But you probably already know this.

You best get your inside and outside thread cutting tooling out for the lathe.

I have been able to find the 1 1/2 - 6 nuts easy enough. It's the bolt or threaded rod it goes on that's got me buggered.

I looked at the normal turnbuckles in that size but none are rated for the 40 - 50K #tensional loading that the suspension may see when the 2.5" dia torsion rods bottom out whereas any grade 5 or higher bolt in the 1.5" range will easily take 3 - 4 times that.

If I have to I will cut my own. I just really don't want to.

Did you exhaust your search for the actual part?

Yes I did. One place thought they could get it but the price quote was more than my house cost 13 years ago!

As far as salvage goes there are not a lot of machines around like this and those suspension rods tended to be the first thing that disappeared or that is too beat up rusted or bent to be sellable.

Fabricating my own is just the most cost effective and practical route to go but finding a large left hand thread bolt to make the one end right is proving rather difficult.

I could make it with right hand threads on both ends but then to set the torsion bar tension right would mean taking half the suspension linkage apart every time to adjust it.

How about using fine and coarse threads (possibly of different diameters, including metric or pipe) this would give less range, but a quicker release might be designed for the suspension linkage connection.

Good luck and insperation!

Another thought.

Got any friends in the oil fields?

Do they have on site fabrication/machine shops?

TCM,

Do the threading on the rod. If you can get the LH nuts, you are home free. Threading the rod in the lathe builds character! And you will have the nut to check the fit as you go! Also, you can build the rod out of any material you want (or have laying around)--choose something hard and tough if extra challenge is needed.

About your only real challenge will be if you have a small lathe--those 6 TPI threads may present way too much surface as you get close to finishing the threads and cause chatter in a little, flexible lathe. You'd have to run the tool down each flank separately.

A cop-out method might be to use finer threads: Easier to cut.

Good luck!

Jon.

I have a Smithy 1340I (13"dia X 40" long) which can hack cutting threads this large it's just a time consuming pain to do it and I am very lazy you should know.

I was just hoping to find some big left hand thread bolts or threaded rod and do it the easy way.

I have too much crap irons in the fire as is this summer.

That and my lathe is over in my brothers garage while we are building the new house so if I plan to use it I have to go over everything clean it up and and take the slack out of all of the slides first (he does a lot of low precision aluminum and plastic work with it) plus find the right cutter and what not. That in itself would be more work than cutting the threads.

Yeah, I feel your pain. I have a big 16 x 96 lathe and a 36" shaper out in the hayfield waiting for a shop big enough to house them. All my work is currently done with what is probably a clone of your Smithy--a 13x40 Taiwanese special.

You're probably best off to get a local machine shop to turn up the short length of LH thread you need. At least you pay for the minimum amount of outside labor.

Jon.

All the machine shops around there are probably too busy doing big jobs for all the fracking oil companies to work on small stuff like this.

Depends how much value tcmtech puts on his time. Or maybe how much time Mrs. tectech will let him play and not make any money.

More like I will do this just so that I don't have to endure a non deserved hen pecking after she gets one from her mother.

If she old granny hen gets after bad enough I might hand file this all out with a dull fingernail file so I don't have to deal with her.

The things a man will do to avoid dealing with an over wound wife some days amazes me.

Actually grandma hen loves me. She lives a third of the way around the world and does not speak english but she knows I keep her daughter in line somewhat more grounded in reality.

Have you tried a MILL SUPPLY distributor to see if they can get it or knows where you could get it? They often have many "bastard" items (may have numerous layers of dust on it) or know the business good enough to get you in the right direction.

Several in my area have been able to obtain very unique items for me including a 1-1/2" left hand pipe tap. Please don't ask what that was for, the wife would kill me!

Give them a try.

Good Luck, Old Salt
