Linux Based PLC Control

I am looking to find out what experience people have had with linux based plc control, specifically for Allen Bradley SLC-500 series PLCs, but any series will do. I am wondering what software you used, if you could compare it with RSLOGIX, how would you compare it, etc. The reason is wanting to go with a more stable operating system for the API that we use to interface with the PLCs, and I don't want to continue to depend on Windows.

What software is available? I looked up PLCIO, but it seems a lot pricier than RSLOGIX. Other hits seem to have come up dry.

We have used Linux for >10 years to work with WAGO PLCs. It works fine. The UDP protocol we use should work with Allen Bradley. Why don't you ask them? We wrote the s/w in house.

Allen Bradley SLC-500 is quite old. It has a very large user base and this is why AB are still supporting it, but check with them how long they intend to continue support before you commit yourself to this system.

We use it for several clients. It is versatile and easy to use but the back-up from AB is patchy unless you pay their excessive fees for the on line support package. For very large applications use the 32 way I/O cards as the number of card slots (even with extension racks) can be a limiting factor. We have one user who has extended his requirements to the point that we are now removing 16 way I/O and replacing with 32 way, with all the hassle of rewiring in the control panel. Interfacing with HMI's is easier than Siemens but harder than B&R or Omron
