Benz class, circa 1934ish

06/02/2007 11:31 PM

Hello: This time I was wondering if anyone had the same dream as I. My memory fails me in my old age however does any one know or are interested in reproduction. Specifically the most expensive from the 30's. I just forget the details but I am willing to afford the effort to reproduce same. EXACTLY! I mean right down to the best of the best coach workers et al. I am sorry I just can't remember the year I speak of but I know it is rare and I think there was only six ever made. A.H had four of them. H.G. had one and RFH had the other. Be that as it may that would be one hell of a car to reproduce. Let's make 10. Anyone in? A.H elliwell

After trying to comprehend this muddled mess, I'm wondering if you are attempting to recall the Bugatti Royale? I can't guess whose initials you meant to reference, but none look like the actual owners of these cars. There were six [plus a prototype, which was destroyed] built, most expensive car of their day, etc. No two are, or ever were, alike, each having different coachwork. IF that's what you're after, you'd need to build ten, all different from the originals AND each other. Actually, you'd need to find several different coachmakers, a feat rather difficult today in and of itself. One source (http://www.ktsmotorsportsgarage.com/quiz/quiz13.html) suggests that one of the originals recently sold for $17 million, about double what the last sale of one brought. Replicating any one of them "EXACTLY!" would likely cost more than buying one, even IF they came up for sale. My (ahem!) "personal fortune" would be sadly inadequate. Oh - and new duplicates wouldn't meet emissions, crash safety, or other requirements to be road-legal.

An exact replica of a Bugatti Royale already exists and resides in a museum in England, I forget where. One man's dream completed.

My question is not muddled! You see if you think of the era, I could offend a great meber of the populus. Its the NZ/JW thing. I am not about to spell it ou I asummed it was umbderstut'; sorry! However, it is the 540K that I was thinking about. Thanks to well I can't se it now but I think it was #3 answer. He/she nailed it. What I am looking for are the drawings to make a replica, butr exact. Oh and I think it was #2 person...AH only commished' Porche, He funded FIAT only as a ploy.

I'd say the 1931 Bugatti Royale is probably the most highly valued car of all time. The Benz 540K was famous (as were the SSK's), but many (several hundred) were produced, and it was a toy in comparison to the Bugatti.

The Bugatti is far too stately for my tastes, but several of the Ferraris in this list of pricey cars would be fun. Also the Alfa Romeo 8C (black below) (which made the list) has been a favorite for a long time as is the Talbot Lago (blue), which did not make the list.

There were extremely detailed models made of these cars by a company called Pocher. They were large 1/8 scale, and super realistic. Leather seats, working door latches, suspensions, wire wheels, all the way down to spark plug wires. The kits cost in the neighborhood of $900-$1000, and took several hundred hours to build properly. I would just try to find one of those kits. Easier to store, no need to insure it, and you can still use it when global oil production falls off so much that fuel is only available to fight wars and make food.

First off ,who is and I quote" A.H had four of them. H.G. had one and RFH had the other". Are these people, museums or companies? You need to be more specific. The only brand you mentioned was "Benz" in your thread title. In the mid thirties Benz produced some exotic racing cars, some with supercharged engines. Could these be the cars you remember? They are indeed rare and extremely expensive.

Out of concideration, I will not say! Read your history I am sure in the adolf/ opps, I mean adult section you can read of 19330's history. Look at the titles, everyone seemed to get that I was speaking safely about Hit/Him/Gob. I am just not going to say it in this nice forum!!!

dear Ashman.

I dont know about the value of your life, but if it cannot be translated into figures (courrent money) it may be extremly hard to get those replicas.

I have no idea how much of a exact replica you wich to get , but if it is an actual car with the exact caractristics , you really may want to consider the chance of getting a existing one.

apart that , it may be actually impossible to make a exact replica of it.

(thereare no materials in the market to)

I agree. Far better to simply buy an existing one. You could spend more to build a perfect replica, and you have just that -- a replica, with less intrinsic value than the original. Of course, the entire idea of spending some number of millions on a single car seems utterly pointless to me. So many more worthwhile things to do with money. Drive a Prius, give the rest to poor kids who need food.
