Mathematically you can have as many as you like for convenience.

Physically we usually use 3 mutually perpendicular (linear) axes x,y,z.

However it's about your frame of reference. It might be convenient to use a rotating or in elecronics a sinusoidal frame of reference an refer measurments to that.

You can add in time of course if its relevant.

These things are tools to help us work stuff out, so we choose dimensions, axes, frames of reference etc to suit our application.

If you are designing wallpaper paterns then 2 dimensions are plenty (although your boss might like a time element in there!)

Mathematicians use as many "dimensions" as they may require, and a good examples of that are found in some of the recent (last 20 years?) papers on String Theory, but I'm going to assume that you're not talking about linear measurement or whether there is a limit to the number of mathematical dimensions, even though by doing so, I may subject myself to ridicule . . .

Start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Units_of_measurement

There's lots of links to look at to count all the "dimensions."

In the physical world there are 4. Three spacial and time.

And then there is of course, The "Twilight Zone". Do-do-do-do....

There's Freddy, George, Carmine, and Bud. However, Freddy and George aren't talking to each other... Carmine is a bitch.

The Bud in England (6%) is better than here in Oregon (3.2%). They had Budweiser and Coors Light--go figure.

Did they serve it warm? Or have the English finally progressed to a state where they realize cold beer is definitely better?

Guinness Pops, all around!!!

Of course, we have our fearless leader to help us understand English... "I know it's spelled nuclear, but it's pronounced 'nuquler.'"

Re: dimensions

No, no, no!

It's inch, foot, yard, mile, micrometer, millimeter, centimeter, decimeter, meter, kilometer. There's also angstrom, barley corn, Bohr radius, calibre, chain, cubit, ell, fathom, finger, furlong, hand, light-year, line, link, mickey, micron, nail, nautical mile, pace, palm, parsec, point, quarter, rod, pole, perch, rope, span, spat, stick, twip, are, barn, barony, board, cord, dunam, hectare, hide, rood, square chain, square link, stremma, township, yardland, just to name a few.

There's also litre, lambda, minim, drop, dash, pinch, fluid scruple, fluid drachm, teaspoon, tablespoon, pony, fluid ounce, shot, jigger, gill, cup, pint, fifth quart gallon just to name a few more.

Carmine got stuck at shot or jigger.

Ffreddy and George arn't talking to each other because George ran off with the fifth.

"I can't believe we're 20,000 leagues beneath the sea!"

"Uh, no. We will be traveling for 20,000 leagues beneath the sea."

"Like I said! Wow! we're 20,000 leagues beneath the sea!"

"No! Now listen... We are not that deep. We are traveling 20,000 leagues in a horizontal fashion."

"But we're so deep! 20,000 leagues beneath the sea!"

"Now shut up, and listen!!! We are not 20,000 leagues beneath the sea, you idiot..."

Re: dimensions

Of course one cannot travel 20,000 leagues "down." However, I wonder if this feat has ever been done. If I remember correctly, we did send a nuclear sub around the world. They only came up once to off-load a sick crewman. Even then, I don't think they traveled 20,000 leagues. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that be more than twice around the world? (yes, I understand one cannot travel in a straight line around the world. added as a proviso for those who love to pounce upon the obvious.)

If I'm not mistaken, the "Nautilus" went under the North Pole ice cap back in the fifties. Ahhh . . . I finally found something on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Nautilus_%28SSN-571%29

On the other hand, a league is 3 miles, If I'm not mistaken, so 20,000 leagues would be a helluva long trip under sea.

You are all adding new dimensions to conversation.

I try my level best to stay out of the Mother in law dimension.

The variation was intended to sound absurd. As in fact, was the entire statement.

Like when I used to tell people, "It's not rocket surgery for crying outside!" I don't do it much anymore. I got tired of people trying to correct me.

I think my problem is that I am the only one who laughs at my jokes. I should probably become an engineer.

Ahhh (whoops sorry)

I used to work with a guy who would deliberately say 'Palestine' for 'Philstine'.

And he'd call a Basque (as in lingerie)...a 'Basque separate tits' (Basque Separatist)...

Dunno if that translates over the pond....

well I always thought there were the 5th dimension they sang about the age of Aquarius but there were only 4 of them so it gets confusing-I wonder if they drank their beer cold or warm?

Re: dimensions

in string theory... 11

X-Y-Z and time (1-2-3-4)

for each "well-kwon" dimesion, exist two dimension more, this is a cilinder, then angular position and radius for each X, Y and Z:

Xr, Xa, Yr, Ya, Zr and Za (5-6-7-8-9-10)

are very, very, very, small and we cant see.

and other dimension (the eleven) is out side the our universe (absolute fiction) , is where "BigBang turn on"

with this theory is possible explain very cuestion, that is impossibly explain with 3 or 4 dimension.

others theory call about 13 dimension...
