Looking to Major in Electrical Engineering

08/07/2013 11:14 AM

Hi ive recently have been looking into new majors that i would like to pursue and Electrical Engineering has caught my eye. I am posting this thread because i would like to see what or if anyone who is in the field could give me some background about what they do or what could be done, as I do not know much about it other then what Universities and some google facts have told me. Id rather hear it from someone who has the knowledge of what the Major actually comes with rather then reading summaries that are trying to talk me into liking the Major.

so if you could please give me some info or atleast point me in a good direction to possibly find out more about it then it would be awesome.

thank you very much.

Do you like to build robots? computers? design control systems? How's your math? Can you calculate an electrical load from a list of appliances?

What projects have you built? There is plenty of demand for qualified engineers...

honestly i love technology in general, i dont not have much training or smarts in a specific area just alittle more knowledge then the average person. dealing with computers and things come very easy to me and i pick them up quickly.

thanks for the responses hope to talk more about it.

Back around 2000 I went back to college a second time to get a degree in Electrical Engineering planning to specialize in power and AE related work.

3.5 years and way too much money spent only to come out feeling dumber for having tried. I don't think I ever had a real class that actually related exclusively to EE the whole time either.

However would you like to know anything about art, canoeing, downhill skiing, geology, chemistry and physics that does not relate to electricity, english, public speaking, health and fitness, business finance, history of the world before WWII, history of the US before the industrial revolution, theoretical math that has little to no application in applied engineering, 2D autocad, how to donate plasma for cash, or how to fight with your state banks unbelievably inept student loans department for over a decade?????????

I have lots of knowledge and experience in those areas thanks to my pursuing a EE degree some years ago.

There may be a useful hint in your question. You are looking for a "new major". Do you have an "old major"? If so then what is/was it and what is the problem with it?

Answers like "I couldn't make it through the math" will be a negative toward EE. Answers like "I don't like biology any more" or "there are no liberal arts jobs" would not be a problem.

Years ago, I received my BS/EE from a pretty good school. To succeed (graduate), you need to be good at math. Math intensive is an understatement - your basic math must be rock solid, because calculus builds off of it. Your love of trying to figure out how things work is a must. If you don't have both of these, don't go into engineering.

For myself (and many of my friends), there were times that I thought about throwing in the towel. The classes are demanding. The curriculum extremely challenging. Your peers are some of the brightest in the school. This is why you have to have a burning desire to be an engineer.

If you do make it and EARN you BS (you truly earn your degree), you now have to find a job and most likely you'll start at the bottom. What you learned in school is simply theory, how to research and problem solving (scientific method is ingrained in you). In the real world, you need to gain practical knowledge - will take years. Or you could go the route of many (I think the majority) of engineers. We take our problem solving skills and branch off into a different field.

What does my BS/EE do for me? I believe that I am an excellent analyzer. I come up with solutions for my client - to help them solve their problems. I am artful in communication and I plan my presentation down to the smallest detail. I am not afraid to hear a "no" and I focus on "closing" the sale. I make sure it's a win-win for all parties; the vendor, my client and the lender. I am a community leader and I use my planning and analysis skills very often. I analyze the situation and come up with a plan of attack and contingencies. I use my knowledge of science (physics, chemistry and electronics) when I'm working on my properties. Why is my thinset drying so fast (or slow), will my mortar be strong, why doesn't the silicone stick to my plexiglas, how do I brace the structure, how do I maximize strength, should I heat the pipes before adding NaOH to clean drains and what can happen if I do, etc.

I don't design circuits, write software, create systems or work on product improvement. I don't work as an engineer and haven't done so for years. I however do use my education and I am thankful that I EARNED my BS/EE. I know that I wouldn't be where I'm at if I didn't.

I hope this helps.

This is the exact response i was looking for thank you so much.

to answer some of the other replys..No i have no majored in anything, i was initially looking to major in Graphic Design but doesnt seem like a good career apth since the job market is tough right now.

alittle about me, Im 21 have my Diploma and attended college for 1 semester where i didnt even take my finals. I was never a fan of school but since ive matured i know it is the smartest and best decision for my future so i have chosen to try and go back. I work a desk job at The United Way, its a very boring to me all i deal with is IT problems\Print Work\Organizing Events and keeping records of our Monthly activities. Im VERY good with people and enjoy helping others, i would rather work by myself but working in a group doesnt bother me much at all. In School Math was my Only subject to give me trouble all 4 years but i never failed. Im good with dealing with problems and tend to always solve it in a timely manner.

Main reason i am going into detail is because im at a stage in my life where 90% of my friends have either Graduted College or are on the verge of doing it and here i am working a job that i dont really like and the pay isnt that great. I feel dumb for dropping out and its driving me to want to complete college to better myself. I honestly have no idea what i would want to do with my life but im am willing to try ANYTHING because i know i will finish it.

Doing the "traditional" thing - go to college, get a degree, find a good job, get married, buy a house, have kids, get a promotion, send kids to college, retire and enjoy your golden years - this doesn't work anymore.

My recommendation is to differentiate yourself from the crowd. Find a field that you have a passion for, but make sure it allows you to make a living. Find a mentor who has been through all the stuff and help him guide you. I wouldn't worry about college, unless the profession you choose requires it. Having a mentor will give you a jump start that is even more important than college.

I wish you much luck and success. Your generation is going to have it much harder than ours.

What I would suggest is, Associates Degree in: Electrical, Mechanical and social science. You would need a minimum of 6 years but you will have a rounded education which would be very adaptable for the long future you have.

The answer depends at least in part on the area of the world in which you are located. In developed nations most EE's don't work in "electrical" engineering, and most schools have combined Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Computer Science into one department. The result is an excess of CECS types and a lack of power engineers to design, operate and manage the national electrical grid, commercial & industrial power systems, alternative energy systems, etc. In the U.S. the Labor Department is projecting a 50% deficit in power engineers. What that means is higher income and rapid advancement for new engineers entering the field.

I strongly agree with the comment about math skills. I don't use trig or calculus on a regular basis, but it's critical in understanding reactive power flow, circulating currents, grid optimization and many other subjects in the field.
