Common Core critics warn of fuzzy math and less fiction

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/08/30/new-age-education-fuzzy-math-and-less-fiction/#ixzz2dyG5Cje7
"The math standard focuses on investigative math, which has been shown to be a disaster," Glyn Wright, executive director of Eagle Forum, told FoxNews.com. "With the new math standard in the Common Core, there are no longer absolute truths. So 3 times 4 can now equal 11 so long as a student can effectively explain how they reached that answer."

I totally agree but, 1 + 1 = 1. Boolean Algebra works from that system. I'm sure it can be helpful if someone could prove how 3x4=11. Maybe we'll have another mathematical system to add. Question everything, always.

"Glyn Wright, executive director of Eagle Forum, told FoxNews.com" kills it for me.

Now I'm for it all the way.

Eagle Forum is one of the most fanatically radical groups to come along in a long time.

They make the tea party look like Democrats.

Maybe they will sell you 4 jugs of 11 dollar antifreeze for $ 30 ? Worth a try if you can prove the math to them. Just remember that there are in his own words "no absolutes", so anything is possible if you can explain it to an idiot. ( might be a problem if they are selling you a 50/50 mix though, better get the 100% )

Did they say what numerical base they were using? Admittedly, base 11 is unusual.

marker-

I has been my experience that fuzzy math is not correct. To Miss Owen's, one of my HS math teachers who taught old math, anything that was fuzzy math was an incorrect answer on your answer page. Her concept of this was anything correct is correct. Anything that could be fuzzy math is a deviation from the correct answer. Therefore fuzzy math is incorrect math.

Miss Owens was my teacher and as far as I know the teacher is always right!

Good Luck, Old Salt

Don't even get me started on the Socialist Common Core Agenda, unless you want to be here reading my comments all day long. It's nothing but a dangerous invasive Socialist indoctrination program "dumbing down" the kiddies. It also dictates via testing results and grades what lifetime career course you're child is to follow, and also allows or disallows your kids going to college.

And let's not go there regarding the massive DATA MINING (several hundred points mind you) that collects information not only of the kid, but also of the parents, siblings, and grandparents including religion, voter registration, firearms ownership (in essence GUN REGISTRATION), parent's income, etc etc etc......the list is very long.

Then there's the proposed biometrics....retinal scans, facial recognition scans, fingerprints, mug shot photos, testing your kid's brainwave, eye, and major body responses during tests, etc etc etc.

Then there's the outrageous costs just to administer the scholastic achievement tests. Currently with the long used system, the cost to grade the tests is around $13 per student. With Common Core, it's projected to soar over $225 per student or more. Not even discussed yet are the costs associated with the CC Agenda implementation, retraining teachers, new textbooks, new teaching aids. the list goes on. And who foots the bill for all this "FORWARD CHANGE" being implemented by the Progressive Educational OvomitBots? You and me, the US Taxpayer. Just you wait and see your school taxes go right through the roof!!!!!!!

One last thing: CC teaches the kiddies how to take the tests, not teaching them solid learning skills that will be retained for a lifetime. Also, it emphasizs "no child left behind approach" (Hello Obama Regime) and that all kids must be taught to a COMMON LEVEL. So much to teaching kids based on their abilities and special needs, etc.!

So why change things when they're not broken?!!!

Capt. I might add (I can actually due that stuff with out a calculator mind you) that we use to start school around the 2nd week of Sept and it would run through 1st of May. We had two weeks off at Christmas (it was ok to say that then) and we had two weeks off in the spring. In that short period of time we actually learned how to read, write and do some math. Now they want the kids to start the 2nd week of August and run through mid June. They learn nothing in this time frame. The teachers have their hands tied, and we spend a ton of money for B.S. in the schools that administrators teem needed. We then add someones idea of a testing system to see how bad we are doing in not teaching and don't change a thing once we get the data. We expect everyone to go to college and then we only want to pay them min wage. We don't or won't train skilled trades folks any more so the industrial people are crying for repair people.

Sorry, I will get off my soap box now!

He only suggests that it might equal 11. He himself offers no proof, nor can he. It is pure S--t. Just try to tell him you will pay him 11 thousand for 4 of his new math courses at his university and see how fast his math knowledge improves. ( at 3K each ) There's an old comedy video out there somewhere where the old folks teach the educated son about math. ( ma and pa kettle, I think ). This is similar but Glyn is actually trying to be serious. I bet there is a class about perpetual motion in his world, too. The really sad part about it is that he has a following and young minds will waste time being led astray. OH did he mean 3*4=11 in RELATIVISTIC math lol.
