GS User Question - Industrial Food Dehydrators

08/14/2013 9:21 AM

A user sent an inquiry about industrial food dehydrators. While IHS GlobalSpec has many product selection guides, we don't yet have a lot of information for the food industry. Can anyone provide a good site with reference material for industrial food dehydrators? Thanks for your help.

There are site available, if we can narrow it down a little by finding what they are looking for.

  • Suppliers of dehydrators?
  • the science of dehydrators?
  • Design of dehydrators?
  • What type of applications or what are they dehydrating? Fruits, meats, whey.

Some use a spray dryer while other processes require the use of a convection type oven.

Recommend that they go with Freeze Drying. There is very little loss in vitamin content making it a healthy alternative.

Advantages

Once the water is removed from foods, they become very light. This makes for easier porthttp://www.cuddonfreezedry.com/products/ability of large amounts of food and cheaper transportation of the food. Freeze-dried foods tend to retain most of their nutritional quality, taste, shape and size. They do not require refrigeration, and can last for months or years. Freeze-dried foods can also be re hydrated very quickly, unlike dehydrated foods.

Although expensive, freeze-dried foods can come in quite handy. You can rehydrate them using either cold or hot water, so you can carry the food you need without worrying about having a way to keep the food cold or to heat it up. Their long shelf life also makes freeze-dried foods a viable option for emergency food stores.

Food dehydrators you need to be specific on what your trying to dehydrate.

One that would be use for certain powered foods like cake mixes is different to those used to dehydrate say fruit.
