08/18/2013 12:10 AM

I was going through some products specs and I'll like to know which is better and why? IPS capacitive touchscreen OR TFT capacitive touchscreen? Thanks.:

One's more touchy, the other more feely, but I forget which is which.

"IPS stands for In-Place Switching. IPS LCDs are superior to normal TFT LCD displays with wider viewing angles and lower power consumption which leads to a much improved battery life. IPS-LCDs are costlier than normal TFT LCD and hence are found only on higher end smartphones. A higher resolution (640 x 960 pixels) version of IPS LCD is used in Apple iPhone 4 and is called Retina Display because of its brilliant picture quality."

TFT stands for thin film transistor, and all types of cell phone LCDs, laptop LCDs, LCD monitors and LCD TVs are based on TFT technology. So IPS LCDs are TFT LCDs also.

The power consumption for an IPS LCD is not significantly greater, or less, than any other type of color active-matrix LCD. In fact the light transmission for an IPS LCD is slightly lower than older style TN (twisted nematic) LCDs, so the net power consumption for the display is slightly higher (to achieve the same brightness level).

An LCD that is referred to as a 'retinal display' is one with extremely high resolution. This high resolution allows the 'pinch and zoom' manipulation of a display to look very smooth. When 'pinch and zoom' is performed on a non-retinal display the result is that the display appears to jump, or jitter, as it grows or shrinks since there are fewer available steps of resolution.

As for the touch screen itself, PCAP, or projective-capacitance, is generally considered the 'best' technology for consumer products. It was the first to allow pinch-zoom and multi-touch. Early versions did not work when gloves were worn, unless the gloves had a conductive tip. Since then, newer versions of PCAP allow the use of most gloves. The other main contender consumer touch technology is multi-touch resistive, which is fairly new. It works with any kind of glove, allows pinch-zoom and multi-touch.

Hi Usbport,

I offer a correction. Multi-touch was around before P-CAP. The two-touch zoom, rotate, etc. were developed for IR touch sensors which used cameras or IR sensors.

Of course these were for displays that are much larger than those found on phones.

What is the application? They both do the job well.

Well, not quite.

This is a capacitive touchscreen. Be sure to watch the video on this page:

The OP compares 2 capacitive touch screens, so what is your point? Again it all depends on the application, for all we know the screen could be used in a clean room.

My point is that the average person will find this type of touch screen maddening to say the least, as the slightest thing like the brush of a sleeve will launch programs, and spoil your work.

If it is in a clean room, then there will be a few less things to make the use of this type of touchscreen annoying.

There are some algorithms in the controller software/firmware to minimize this effect. (Double-touch, e.g.) If NO false touches like this are permissible then a conventional resistive or multi-touch resistive panel would be preffered, since they require a minimum touch force to get a 'read' actuation.
