About task manager in XP (OS)

06/04/2007 6:18 AM

Please, whenever I tried to check the status of my CPU by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del keys to open the task manager, the respond is always "Task manager is disabbled by your administrator". Is there any way to restore this... apart from reformating the system?

Thanks

Is this a work computer? If it is, don't do any of these steps, as you'd be violating some policy somewhere. Are you using an administrator account? Are you able to edit your registry?

Start, Run, type regedit

You can search for the task manager registry keys in current user and edit the protection. Reboot, and manage tasks.

If you can't run regedit you may need to write a .bat file to enable it at start up. If you aren't an admin or super user you can change the admin password from a user account, but I wouldn't be comfortable listing how here. Search Google, XP is incredibly weak and easy to hack. Good luck, and when you're done hacking XP, install Ubuntu.

If this is your personal system, who owns the administrator spot? Are you normally logging in at a lower level of privilege? Can you just log off and then log back on as the administrator? If so, you should then be able to run task manager.

My work PC runs XP Pro, at home I have XP home... Guess what file got packed up and sent to my home PC via email? It runs fine on the home version.

I Have had this same problem with task manager closing when you try to open it. I found out that virus scan, spybot, and ad-adware will not detect the problem. The problem is a worm called W32/bropia.worm gen that you get from email. The reason that virus scan does not detact the worm is that system restore is still running. 1) first disable system restore in the control panel. 2) then restart your computer and run virus scan to get rid of the worm. you can restart system restore later. Run all the other scanin g systems you have to .

There are ways to remove those restrictions but they may get you fired. Ask your system admin nicely and explain why you need taskmanager.
