BS 5500 (Allowable Stress of Material)

I am new to BS5500,

for shell thickness calculation, formula is

e=p Di/2f-p

i have issue with f to find its value

Material: SA 516-70

Design temperature: 212 0F

Design pressure: 265 PSI

In the U.S., the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code is followed. Under their method, the allowable stress of SA516-70 is 70,000/4 = 17,500 psi. It appears that BS5500 does this similarly, even if the units are different.

f= lesser of [Re(T)/1.5, Rm/2.5]

Re(T)= yield strength at design temperature

take value of Re(T) from ASME sec II part D table Y-1

Rm = yield strength at room temp (20 0c)

for SA 516 Gr 70

Rm=485 MPa

That makes sense. Also, my memory of ASME may not be up to date with the current version. The main idea is that there is a safety factor applied; neither ultimate nor yield stress is used by itself.

For ASME materials , allowable stress are available against design temperature in ASME sec II pasrt D table 1-A,These allowable stress values are written there by using safety factor 3.5 of tensile strength.

For british code i have no knowledge of such a table so the calculations are to be made for allowabale stress value as mentioned in my last comment.
