Thieves can take a powder now that RFIDs are smaller than a pin's head. It's about time, as theft costs the U.S. $100 billion annually. Stolen DVDs alone account for more than $400 million in annual losses, according to the Entertainment Merchants Association. Products like DVDs can now be protected by RFID technology. A simple solution that uses the RFID tag along with RF activation technology renders DVDs unplayable until they are activated at the cash register by a firmware enhanced RFID scanner. A deal between two companies to produce this technology is expected to be announced this summer.
