RFID Tags Prevent Theft

06/04/2007 7:15 AM

Thieves can take a powder now that RFIDs are smaller than a pin's head. It's about time, as theft costs the U.S. $100 billion annually. Stolen DVDs alone account for more than $400 million in annual losses, according to the Entertainment Merchants Association. Products like DVDs can now be protected by RFID technology. A simple solution that uses the RFID tag along with RF activation technology renders DVDs unplayable until they are activated at the cash register by a firmware enhanced RFID scanner. A deal between two companies to produce this technology is expected to be announced this summer.

What would it actually be on the DVD that gets altered to make it playable?

Who cares, at least the thieves will be put out of work! Hopefully we will see lower prices dues to the stopping of the baddies handwork.

There are though many panicking people who fear that they will lose their freedom with RFID.....

Maybe they are the soon to be out of work thieves!

Roll on RFID!!

I think there will be black market versions of the activation mechanism which the store uses to render the DVD useful. Those who steal will not be put out of work, they will only have to work harder.
