A53 Gr. B vs API 5L Gr. B PSL2

08/28/2013 4:54 AM

Dear Gentlemen,

Please help me to clarify this question:

  • In proposal, our client request using ASTM A53 Grade B or API 5L Grade B PSL2.
  • We order ASTM A53 Grade B
  • Client said that: in our certificate, ASTM A53 Grade B did not present the equivalent with API 5L Grade B PSL 2 (such as: did not have impact test, etc.) that why ASTM A53 Grade B may be can consider equivalent with API 5L PSL1.
  • Our explanation: as per proposal, ASTM A53 Grade B and API 5L Grade B PSL2 are equivalent. we can choose one of them. Proposal did not mention that ASTM A53 Grade B will do impact test.

Please help:

  • Our explanation can accept?
  • What is really different between ASTM A53 Grade B & API 5L Grade B PSL 1 & API 5L Grade B PSL 2

Thank you very much for your kind support!

If your presentation of the wording is accurate, the client's word "or" makes ASTM A53-B acceptable. They did not say that the alternatives had to be exactly equivalent, nor did they specify impact testing.

Depending on the temperature involved, someone might be able to impact test the A53-B, and it might pass the test successfully.

Did you choose ASTM A53 Grade B solely because it was cheaper?

Or, was there some compelling technical reason to choose it?

Tornado is correct.

If your client stated that either pipe specification was acceptable in their request for proposal, you don't need to explain anything.

If they are now stating that they want API 5L pipe, and it is more expensive, I smell a change order.

Incidentally, I regularly use A53 Grade B pipe in some pretty harsh temperature, vibration and pressure environments without any issues.

PSL = Product Specification Level

The differences explained here;

What does the pipe carry?
To what temperatures will the pipe be exposed?
What code is being followed?

Here is comparison:-

Item C Mn P S Cu Ni Cr Mo V Tensile Str. Yield Str.

ASTM A53 0.3 1.2 0.05 0.045 0.5 0.40 0.4 0.15 0.08 60,000 psi 35,000 psi

Grade B

API 5L 0.3 1.2 0.05 0.06 60,000 psi 35,000 psi

GradeB PSL2.

There is no difference in both specs.except sulphar content. Some times quality control engineers are too bookish.

Sorry tabulation is shifting.
