Do a google search under DDC, or DDCS (Direct Digital Control Systems): Basically intelligent building management systems involve connecting all of the HVAC equipment to a central CPU-based control systems via direct connects or an Ethernet-based network. Such a system gives the owner a considerable amount of flexibility in equipment monitoring, load management, lighting control etc.
check out www.zigbee.org. there are numerous companies (Siemens, JCI, Trane, etc.) which are working on commercial building controls with a 2.4 GHz mesh network.
I used to work in a building that had a Building Automation System in it. It had a big PDP-11 for the CPU, a 120 character-wide line printer, a CRT terminal, and a cruddy keyboard that went "click" each time we pressed a key.
Basically, it enabled us to program the time when lights, air conditioning, or convenience outlets were turned on. It also monitored the fire alarm and security systems (part of the building was a bank).
Back in those days (1981), these systems weren't much. I thought the PDP-11 was overkill and I told my boss I could do it with a TRS-80 or APPLE computer but he just laughed.
Today, these systems also control temperature in the building/monitor the water usage/detect if there's too much current in the electrical wiring...all sorts of things. And they do it with graphic displays too.
Oh, by the way. "Intelligent" doesn't really mean what it implies. There's nothing intelligent about these systems. It's just programming.
