E-mailing Multiple Photos

09/10/2013 8:03 AM

When e-mailing photos via my yahoo.com e-mail service, after 6-8 attachments (it varies), I get a window coming up with the message "Attach large files with Dropbox." There is no explanation of what Dropbox is, where it is, or how to access it. There is nothing clickable in the window. When you close the window it seems to prevent any more attachments being made. Does anyone have any ideas?

Dropbox is online file storage. According to the link below, Yahoo and Dropbox are integrated. You're probably getting the message to use Dropbox because your attachment size is too large for Yahoo mail. Yahoo and Dropbox work together by storing your photos on Dropbox, not in your mail message.

In other words, you need to put your photos there, not in your mail message. You can probably select which photos from Dropbox you want to include in your email.

I don't know whether it's the way I've got it configured, but on each device I have dropbox installed I also get a local copy of all the files. This includes my Android 'phone, so if I put a lot of stuff in dropbox from, say, my desktop PC intending to pick it up on my laptop, it also gets downloaded to the 'phone. This can be expensive if it's not connected to wi-fi at the time!

I don't use Dropbox much but if I say, plug a memory stick into my PC & it has some images, I get a pop-up asking if I want Dropbox to synchronise my devices. I guess that is what is happening to you.

No - it just happens after I have attached about 6-8 photos from "My pictures." Up comes the message.

You could also try putting all of your photos in a zip file using Winzip if you have it or one of the free utilities like Peazip. This will reduce the attachment size.

A data compression program may work but many picture files are already well compressed into a JPG or other image related format. Trying to compress a compressed file will often lead to a bigger and not smaller file.

(((O'God))) why to email large files

1) create an account in multiple file hosting services
2) make a new album & set it's privacy (if required*)
3) e-mail a link 2 *and password 2 SMS the PW

You are too young to understand when old people are talking!

This is just so plain easy it could almost be Dropbox!

Which site would you recommend and why?

There used to be a program in XP that could compress pictures in one mouseclick to a size where you could send 50 pics no problem (given that the amount of attachments is unlimited)

Nowadays I think its a bit harder. Unless you want these pics to be printed by the receiver I would always compress pics and send them in a zip file.

Otherwise more e-mails or a album service in the internet or said dropbox will have to do.

Just find out if it is the picture size and/or amount that limits you!

Sorry never tried sending pics from yahoo.

If the pictures do not require high resolution there is the option of making them smaller before sending. (Select file, right click, select "send to email recipient", the popup will appear asking if you want to make the images smaller and there are several options down to 600x400. Just be careful as the smaller you make the image, the more detail is lost.

Will try to get to grips with it.

Your pictures are just too large to email at least the way you were trying. Use the drop-box, make the pictures smaller, compress them as a zip or rar file or send less at a time. Maybe you can pay for a premium service that will allow a larger pay load. The problem with that is the payload may be more than your recipient can receive.

"The problem with that is the payload may be more than your recipient can receive."

How so very true. Or WANT to receive. I sometimes need to rely on dialup access, and it's a real pain waiting for large files to download. Does your recipients all WANT those photos?

Whether they do or not, find a hosting service, drop-box type service, or online photobook service and put your pictures there. Send only the link to your recipients, and let them decide when or if to look at them. Those with smartphones (and paying for bandwidth) will especially thank you.

If you are sending these pics to a company another solution is to use their FTP site.

Yahoo mail limits it's total attachment size to 25 MB per email.

I recently emailed photos from the 2013 San Diego US Sand Sculpting Challenge to numerous relatives and friends and came across the same problem.

Rather than attempt compressing the files, I numbered the emails 1 thru 4 and sent them in four separate emails. A little more effort on my part, but it maintained the resolution of the photo's, some of which had intricate details.

Thanks - I've had to resort to the same process. Works fine with me, up to about 6-8 photos (14 megapixel camera) per e-mail. Each one is about 3 mB.
