The Air Car: A Car Using Compressed Air for Power

09/15/2005 1:56 PM

French company Moteur Developpment International is touting the release of "The Air Car", a compressed air technology (CAT) vehicle. The company claims that the whole car including engine, heating system, and the rest is powered by 300 bars of compressed air, which can be refilled for 1.5 euros.

Skeptical? Well check out the basic principles of the system..

What is the true overall efficiency of the system? It must require more energy to compress the air than can be extracted from it, so if you compress the air with an electric motor, what is the true cost? If you compress it with a gasoline or diesel engine, the same is true.Would it not be more effiicient to simply run the vehicle directly from the source?

With a large industrial air compressor, the cost of 1 cubic meter of compressed air, at 90 psi is around 50 cents, at an average rate of 10 cents per KWH.This is a very expensive utility. You must also figure in the cost of an air drier, filters, lubrication, maintenance on the above, etc.I just don't see how you can come out ahead.
